VW Super Beetle Duo at Bukit Citamiang Camping Ground

This is a late post, but late is better than never; the wise man said. It was in September 2020 and after several months of “staying at home” due to the pandemic, we decided to go out for a quick camping for refreshing. The family did not join purposely, only two of us, accompanied by a German Shepherd.

The camping ground is so called Bukit Citamiang (i.e. Citamiang Hill), only around 60km away from South of Jakarta, towards Puncak. It is written as Citamiang Camping Ground in Google Map. Take the main road to Puncak and take a left turn in the Mega Mendung junction. It is only 6km away from the junction through a small road which it will be more winding and ascending as it goes deeper and higher. If it is your first time, then please follow the Google map direction closely. The tricky one is the last junction and followed by steep uphill road before entering the camping ground area. Generally the road is good for 2wd regular cars. Special precautions should be taken when you drive relatively a wide and large vehicle due to some sharp corners and narrow road.

The two VW Super Beetles have just arrived on site after 1.5hrs driving from Jakarta.
Setting up a roof tent is quick and easy, relatively is faster than the conventional dome tent.
One of the best things about Bukit Citamiang is the spectacular view at night.
Setting a bonfire after dark is a must on site. The wood is provided locally with reasonable price.
When you like photography, you can do many things after dark or during the twilight hour. Just don’t forget to bring your tripod and flash light along with the camera.
Here is another sample a night photograph using long exposure setting. BTW, 19 centigrade is nice; wearing short is still convenient and not too cold…
They said that Bukit Citamiang is one of a very few places where you can view all three mountains in one spot. Here you can see Mount Pangrango (3,019m ASL) and Volcano Gede (2,958m ASL) right next to it to the left (in this picture, it is covered by some clouds). BTW, the elevation of Bukit Citamiang is around 1000m Above Sea Level.
Here is the view of Mount Salak (2,211m ASL). In the morning you have to be quick to shoot them using your camera, otherwise you will miss them as they will be covered by stubborn clouds already.
This is Nelsie, a 9 year old female all-black German Shepherd. You know her already as we have taken her along to camping several times already.

That is a photography-story about Bukit Citamiang camping ground. It is unfortunately to hear that this camping ground is now temporarily closed. The good news is there is another camping ground just next to it, called Bukit Brader camping ground. The PIC is the same; Kang Dillah, WA +62 878 9570 0127. This is 1974 VW 1303 Super Beetle, equipped with a custom made roof rack to accommodate the heavy roof tent.

Camping with Rookies at Sukamantri

Sukamantri Boris 69This was the 3rd time we did camping at Sukamantri camping ground this year. This time we brought a college friend with his family, who have never been in camping before. An important message I got previously from him; the camping must be successful to secure the family’s interest in camping in the future. Otherwise, they won’t go camping anymore & his effort will fail. He realizes an escalating problem to his family that his two kids are addicted in playing gadgets & spending weekend time in shopping malls. Doing outdoor activities in the nature seems don’t attract them. Well I said, this is a common family problem today where gadgets are affordable, shopping malls are convenient & lack of information regarding good camping locations. After all, so many people still think that camping is a complicated & miserable activity. Hahaha… not anymore my friend. Now, we can do camping much easier, less complicated & much more convenient & relaxing. The key word is: preparation.

Sukamantri Boris 70Ini kali ketiga kami camping di Sukamantri di tahun ini. Kali ini, kami membawa tiga keluarga yang belum pernah camping sebelumnya, termasuk keluarga kawan kuliah dulu. Kawan ini berpesan supaya acara campingnya sukses agar keluarganya tidak kapok & mau camping lagi di lain waktu. Kalau gagal, maka tidak akan ada lagi acara camping keluarga. Beliau menyadari ada problem yang akan terus bertambah besar di dalam keluarganya yaitu kedua anaknya sudah adiktif ke gajet & maunya hanya bermain ke mal di akhir pekan. Beraktivitas di luar & berinteraksi dengan alam sepertinya tidak menarik minat mereka. Komentar saya, ini sudah menjadi masalah umum di banyak keluarga karena gajet sudah gampang didapat, mal-mal telah menjadi tempat yang nyaman untuk dikunjungi & kurang informasi tentang tempat camping yang bagus. Juga, masih banyak orang yang menilai bahwa camping adalah aktivitas yang menyusahkan & malahan membawa derita. Hahaha… tidak lagi Bro. Sekarang, kita dapat melakukan aktivitas camping dengan jauh lebih mudah, tidak menyusahkan, lebih nyaman & membuat kita rileks. Kata kuncinya adalah: persiapan.

First of all, we use a tool to help; that is a Campervan. We make camping become a convenient thing to do. A campervan provides you a more convenient & softer mattress. It insulates you better against the cold night air. It protects you more from the environment. It gives you more security while you sleep. Bottom line, we can sleep much better inside a campervan than a tent.

Sukamantri Boris 56 collagePertama-tama; gunakanlah alat bantu, yaitu: Campervan. Kita membuat camping menjadi aktivitas yang nyaman. Campervan menyediakan alas tidur yang lebih empuk & nyaman. Campervan bisa menjaga suhu ruangan lebih hangat di waktu malam. Di dalam campervan, kita akan lebih terlindungi dari lingkungan luar & juga lebih aman. Singkatnya, tidur di campervan akan lebih nyaman daripada tidur di dalam tenda.

Sukamantri Boris 34The campervan also provides you with basic facilities we need during camping. Nowadays cooking is much simpler than the old days. Thanks to the portable gas stoves using a butane gas canister. It’s easy to operate & the gas canister is relatively cheap & easy to get. The fire is clean & hot. It won’t leave dark carbon ash mark on the bottom of your cooking ware which hard to wash. The portable stove means you can cook basically anywhere you like to. During a regular day, most of people like to cook outside, but when it rains, then you can cook inside the campervan.

Sukamantri Boris 5Campervan menyediakan fasilitas-fasilitas basik yang diperlukan saat bercamping. Dewasa ini kegiatan memasak menjadi jauh lebih mudah dibanding dulu. Ini berkat kompor gas portabel menggunakan tabung gas butana. Pengoperasiannya mudah, tabung gasnya mudah diperoleh & relatif murah harganya. Apinya bersih, panas & tidak akan meninggalkan jelaga hitam di alas alat masak. Karena portabel, kompornya dapat digunakan untuk memasak di mana saja. Umumnya orang akan memasak di luar, tetapi ketika hujan, memasak dapat dilakukan di dalam campervan.  

Sukamantri Boris 75The campervan has a water tap with running clean water. You can wash your hands with soap before you eat. You can brush your teeth conveniently at night before you sleep. You can wash your eating utensils & cooking ware without having to walk a few hundred meters to the nearest water source to do it.

Sukamantri Boris 73Di dalam campervan juga terdapat washtafel dengan kran air. Washtafel in dapat digunakan untuk mencuci tangan, pakai sabun, sebelum makan atau untuk menyikat gigi di waktu malam sebelum tidur dengan lebih nyaman. Washtafel juga dapat digunakan untuk mencuci piring, tanpa harus jalan kaki jauh ke tempat air.

Sukamantri Boris 74There is a refrigerator inside, in case you want to keep your food cold. Anyhow, we don’t use it often on site since usually the air is cold enough & we don’t need to keep the raw food overnight.

Sukamantri Boris 71Sebuah kulkas terdapat di dalam campervan. Kulkas ini dapat digunakan untuk menyimpan makanan. Umumnya kulkas ini tidak begitu diperlukan karena udara di tempat camping biasanya sudah dingin & tidak diperlukan untuk menyimpan makanan semalam.

Patar Sukamantri 5During camping, you really want to minimize to use the gadget, but cell phones have to be ready at anytime. The campervan provides a 220V AC power when the cell phone needs recharging. Thanks to its inverter.

Sukamantri Boris 33There is plenty of room inside & outside a campervan which means you have more liberty to bring more cargo; chairs, tables, bags, food, water, etc. These cargo can help your camping become more convenient.

Sukamantri Boris 63Ruangan di dalam campervan cukup luas yang membuat kita dapat lebih leluasa membawa berbagai jenis barang; kursi, meja, makanan, minuman, dsb. Barang-barang inilah yang juga dapat membantu camping kita menjadi lebih nyaman.

Sukamantri Boris 66So here we are; camping with three families who were about to experient camping for the very first time. One family has 5 members, including three kids; one is an early teenager & two below ten. The 2nd family has two teenager kids. The 3rd; only the mother & her early teenager son. Another friend, this one is experienced in camping, brought his below ten son & his 2 years old daughter. On top of that, they were two drivers & a campervan driver. I brought two campervans. According to my calculation, they were 17 people total.

Sukamantri Boris 14Jadi sampailah kami di lokasi camping bersama-sama tiga keluarga yang belum pernah camping. Salah satu keluarga beranggota lima orang, termasuk satu ABG & dua anak-anak di bawah 10 tahun. Keluarga kedua terdiri dari tiga orang termasuk dua ABG. Keluarga ketiga; hanya ibunya & ABG cowok. Kawan kuliah lainnya, yang ini sudah cukup pengalaman camping, membawa dua anak termasuk yang masih usia 2 tahun. Disamping itu, ada dua driver & satu driver campervan. Saya membawa dua campervan. Menurut perhitungan, semuanya total ada 17 orang di rombongan.

Sukamantri Boris 4Second; to accommodate these people, I had to rent three tents plus two of my own tents. Two more tents were brought individually. This was part of the preparation. I had to find out how many people would go in more details; adults, boys, girls & drivers.

Sukamantri Boris 57 collageKedua; untuk mengakomodasi semuanya, saya harus menyewa tiga tenda tambahan di samping dua tenda yang saya bawa sendiri. Dua tenda lainnya di bawa masing-masing keluarga. Ini adalah bagian dari persiapan. Saya harus mengetahui dengan pasti berapa orang yang ikut dengan lebih detil: dewasa, anak-anak, cowok atau cewek & driver.

Patar Sukamantri 11Third; get a best spot on the camping ground. At Sukamantri, the area which we can bring in our campervans is very limited, unless you drive a 4×4 car. We wanted the campervans to get inside the camping ground. At that time, I also knew that during a long weekend, the camping ground would be crowded normally (I was right). Therefore I left Jakarta very early, earlier than common people. Also to avoid traffic jam in Bogor. The result was paid-off. We got the best camping spot; near the parking lot & accessible for the campervans. Only 10 minutes later after we got there, a group of camper arrived. Their camping location was a bit further, far from the parking lot & accessible only to high ground-clearance vehicles. If we were late only for 10 minutes, it would have been an opposite story.

Sukamantri Boris 67Ketiga; dapatkan posisi terbaik di camping ground. Di Sukamantri, tempat di mana mobil dapat masuk ke area camping sangatlah terbatas, kecuali kendaraannya 4×4. Campervan kami harus bisa masuk ke area camping. Pada waktu itu, saya pun menyadari bahwa di akhir pekan yang panjang, tempat camping akan sangat padat (ternyata saya betul). Maka sayapun meninggalkan Jakarta lebih pagi. Ini pun juga untuk menghindari kemacetan lalu lintas di Bogor. Hal ini membuahkan hasil. Kami mendapatkan posisi yang sangat bagus, mungkin yang terbaik; dekat dengan tempat parkir mobil & kedua campervan dapat masuk. Hanya 10menit berselang, ada grup orang lain yang tiba. Mereka hanya dapat mengambil tempat yang lebih jauh & hanya dapat dimasukin kendaraan yang tinggi. Kalau saja kami terlambat tiba di lokasi hanya 10 menit, ceritanya akan berbeda.

Fourth; bring plenty of food. Most of children can be calmed down with food. At least 50% of the time we spend on camping is cooking & eating. No matter how taste the food is, eating at camping ground always tastes better. This is actually pretty danger for our diets. Hahaha…Sukamantri Boris 76

Keempat; bawalah banyak makanan. Umumnya anak-anak akan lebih tenang kalau perut tak lapar. 50% dari waktu kita di camping adalah memasak & makan. Di lokasi camping, biasanya semua makanan akan berasa enak. Sebetulnya ini cukup berbahaya kalau kita sedang diet makan. Hahaha…

Fifth; arrange some activities to avoid boredom. For example, we did hiking to a nearby water fall, led by a local guide. At night, we set up a bonfire; something always be demanded by kids.

Sukamantri Boris 29 Kelima; usahakan berbagai macam aktivitas untuk mencegah kebosanan. Contohnya, kami berhiking ke lokasi air terjun terdekat, dipimpin seorang guide lokal. Di waktu malam, kami menyalakan api ungun; sesuatu yang pasti dicari anak-anak & tanpanya acara camping akan menjadi hambar.

Sukamantri Boris 59 collageSukamantri Boris 44That was during a long weekend before the independence-day holiday. Sukamantri camping ground was unusually very crowded. The night was noisy, not a calm night. It had not been raining for a few months. Running spring water was little & bathrooms were almost empty of water. Nevertheless, we managed to have a pleasant camping experience, especially for these rookies. They are keen to do more camping next time, with campervans, of course.

Sukamantri Boris 61Acara camping kami diadakan di akhir pekan yang panjang sebelum hari Kemerdekaan 17 Agustus. Tidak seperti biasanya, Sukamantri menjadi tempat yang sangat ramai di waktu itu. Malam hari ramai & berisik oleh aktivitas orang-orang yang camping. Waktu itu juga sudah tidak turun hujan selama beberapa bulan. Suplai air ke tempat-tempat mandi sangat kecil & bak-bak mandi sudah hampir kosong. Walaupun begitu, secara umum kami berhasil memberikan pengalaman camping yang berkesan positif kepada para nubies. Mereka tertarik untuk acara camping di lain waktu, tentu saja dengan campervan.

Campervan camping in Gunung Pancar (again)

Here we are, camping in Gunung Pancar again. Gunung Pancar is a favorite place because it’s near from Jakarta, good access road, not too high elevation (only around 400m asl) & not far from a supermarket or convenience stores for the supplies.
Untuk kesekian kalinya, kami kembali camping di Gunung Pancar. Tempat ini sudah menjadi favorit karena letaknya yang dekat dari Jakarta, aksesnya mudah, elevasinya tidak terlalu tinggi (hanya 400m dpl) & tidak jauh dari supermarket atau toko retail.

Pancar M89 10In honoring to two of our college friends; one is still under a medical treatment & another one is having a vacation in Indonesia (he lives in Zurich, Switzerland) I gave them the idea to do an easy camping in Gunung Pancar, bringing a campervan; something they wanted to know. Another friend joining us with his 9yo son & 5yo female Doberman.
Untuk menghormati dua orang kawan kuliah dulu; satu sedang menjalani pengobatan & satu lagi sedang berlibur ke tanah air (beliau tinggal di Zurich, Swiss), saya mengajak mereka camping ke Gunung Pancar dengan menggunakan campervan, sesuatu yang sebelumnya membuat mereka penasaran. Satu kawan lagi bergabung membawa putranya berumur 9 tahun & anjing Dobermannya berumur 5 tahun.Pancar M89 9It was two days after Eid Al-Fitr; the Jagorawi toll road had a 1km long traffic jam before the Sentul City exit, the place was crowded with people, motorcycles & cars. Yes, it was still holiday season. Compared with the last time I came here, this time was completely different; too many visitors, littering garbage everywhere & bad traffic. The good news was we got the best camping spot; the same spot when we were here in January.
Waktunya hanya dua hari sesudah Lebaran; jalan tol Jagorawi macet parah 1km sebelum pintu keluar Sentul City, tempatnya penuh dengan pengunjung, sepeda motor & mobil. Betul, masih dalam masa liburan. Berbeda dengan waktu kami camping di sini di bulan Januari lalu, sekarang lokasinya terlalu ramai, sampah berserakan di mana-mana & lalu lintas yang padat. Kabar baiknya adalah kami mendapatkan spot camping yang terbaik, yang sama dengan camping terakhir lalu.

Pancar M89 3So we spot the Deep Purple campervan in the same position. This time we rigged up three tents on the flat field below. When the dusk coming by, many visitors disappeared. Only a few families setting up their tents nearby. We enjoying more as the place became quieter.
Kami memarkirkan Deep Purple di tempat yang sama. Lalu kami mendirikan tiga buah tenda di lapangan yang datar di bawahnya. Menjelang senja hari, banyak pengunjung yang kembali pulang. Hanya beberapa keluarga yang bercamping malam itu. Lokasinya pun menjadi tenang & lebih menyenangkan.

One thing to tell is regarding the female Doberman; Gamma. She is very well trained by her owner. She obeys her master’s commands to stay, to sit, to get into her portable kennel, to get out, etc. She didn’t really get distracted by the crowded. She was pretty much focusing to her master. And she was a very good guard dog, guarding us during the night. She didn’t bark at all during the stay but she could detect if somebody has a bad intention to us; what Cesar Millan always says ‘the negative energy’ that dogs feel & see. In this situation, without barking, she will show her stand & if the guy keep approaching, she will bite, a bad bite.
Ada satu hal yang menarik untuk diceritakan di sini yaitu anjing Doberman betina yang diajak camping bernama Gamma berumur 5 tahun. Kelihatan sekali bahwa anjing ini sangat terlatih. Gamma menurut apa saja yang diperintahkan oleh tuannya sekaligus pelatihnya untuk diam di tempat, duduk, untuk masuk ke dalam kandang portabelnya, untuk keluar kandang, dsb. Gamma tidak begitu terdistraksi oleh keramaian melainkan tetap fokus kepada pelatihnya. Anjing ini juga anjing penjaga yang baik, menjaga kami di waktu malam. Selama di tempat camping, Gamma tidak menggonggong sekalipun. Anjing ini dapat mendeteksi kalau ada orang yang berniat jahat, sesuatu yang sering disebutkan oleh Cesar Millan sebagai ‘energi negatif’ yang dirasakan & dilihat oleh anjing. Dalam situasi seperti ini, tanpa menggonggong, Gamma akan berdiri menghadang & jika orang berniat jahat tersebut tetap maju, maka Gamma akan menyerang & menggigit, yang dapat mengakibatkan cedera serius.

Next time, I will bring my Labrador & perhaps my Beagle camping with her & let them be trained by my friend.

Pancar M89 7Eating, cooking, talking, drinking, cooking, eating, talking, etc. that’s all we did spending the evening & the night. We also set up a bonfire & burned a few marshmallows. It was a dry season so we had no worries of getting rain.
Makan, memasak, ngobrol, minum-minum, memasak, makan, ngobrol, dsb. Hanya itulah yang kami lakukan bersama mengisi waktu sore & malam. Kami juga menyalakan api ungun & memanggang marshmallow. Di tengah musim kering, kami tidak kuatir akan turun hujan.

Pancar M89 8It was a pleasant quick & easy camping with my old friends. Usually I do camping with my family. We enjoy our friendship. By the next morning, we left the place back to Jakarta. Gunung Pancar, for sure, sooner or later, we’ll be back with the campervans.
Acara campingnya cukup singkat tetapi sangat berkesan diluangkan bersama-sama kawan lama. Biasanya saya camping bersama keluarga. Kami menikmati persahabatan ini. Di pagi harinya, kami kembali pulang menuju Jakarta. Cepat atau lambat, kami pasti akan kembali ke Gunung Pancar.

Have you ever heard a camping ground called Sukamantri? I bet you have not & I wouldn’t blame you for that. Sukamantri is actually one of the best camping grounds for citizens of Jakarta (& also Bogor), but unfortunately it is not that popular compared to, for instance, Gunung Pancar & Gunung Bundar. I’d blame on the misled information regarding the difficulty to reach the place due to the road condition, written in many travelling blogs, saying that the road is very bad & we need a kind of SUV type vehicles. Well, this is 90% wrong. Yes, it’s not advisable to drive a sedan, although my sister drove a Suzuki SX4 (even it’s a crossover model but the ground clearance is not that different with sedan), but generally we can drive any types of cars. You can trust me on this.
Jika Anda belum pernah mendengar sebuah bumi perkemahan bernama Sukamantri, saya maklum. Sukamantri sebenarnya adalah salah satu bumi perkemahan terbaik untuk warga kota Jakarta (& juga Bogor), tetapi sayangnya tempat ini tidak begitu populer dibanding misalnya, Gunung Pancar & Gunung Bundar. Saya menyalahkan informasi yang ngaco yang banyak ditulis di blog tentang kondisi jalan ke sana yang sangat jelek & hanya bisa dilalui oleh kendaraan jenis SUV saja. Informasi ini 90% salah. Memang betul kalau sedan tidak disarankan (walaupun apakah memang ada orang mau memakai sedan pergi ke bumi perkemahan di gunung?), meskipun adik saya kemarin tenang-tenang saja membawa Suzuki SX4nya yang mirip sedan, tetapi secara umum semua jenis kendaraan bisa dipakai menuju lokasi ini. Percayalah.

Sukamantri 20The good things about Sukamantri:

  1. 60km away from Pasar Minggu, South of Jakarta, (& only 10km from Bogor) is considered as NEAR. This is much nearer from Gunung Bundar.
  2. Relatively a quiet place. Have you been to Gunung Pancar? It’s closer but it’s much more crowded & noisy.
  3. Quiet also means we don’t be bothered to book the place in advance. Just go show & a camping spot is always available.
  4. Our vehicle can enter the camping ground. This means we can camp using our Campervan & we can bring heavier logistics for more convenient camping.
  5. Comfortable elevation at 800m above sea level. At this elevation, the air is very fresh & the temperature is very nice because it’s not too cold.
  6. Toilets are many available in generally good condition with flowing clean natural spring water.
  7. Warung (food shops) are available, just in case we are too lazy to cook ourselves.
  8. The place is safe. It’s part of the training ground of the Army’s elite Kujang Raider unit. Nobody will commit a crime in an Army training ground, will it?
  9. Cellular phone signal is available, thought it’s on-off. Recommended provider: Telkomsel.

Kenapa Sukamantri menarik?

  1. Jaraknya dekat. Dari Pasar Minggu (Jakarta Selatan) hanya 60km saja. Dari Bogor hanya 10km. Tempat ini jauh lebih dekat daripada bumi perkemahan Gunung Bundar.
  2. Tempatnya relatif tidak ramai. Pernahkah Anda pergi ke Gunung Pancar? Memang lebih dekat tetapi terlalu ramai & lebih berisik.
  3. Sepi juga berarti kita tak perlu untuk memesan tempat ini jauh-jauh hari. Cukup langsung datang & hampir selalu ada tempat tersedia.
  4. Kendaraan dapat masuk ke area camping. Ini berarti kita dapat menggunakan Campervan untuk camping & dapat membawa perbekalan yang banyak.
  5. Elevasi sekitar 800m di atas permukaan laut yang membuat temperatur nyaman tetapi tidak terlalu dingin. Udaranya pun segar.
  6. Toilet tersedia cukup banyak & tersebar. Kondisi umumnya terawatt. Air alam yang jernih tersedia mengalir tanpa henti.
  7. Warung makanan banyak tersedia, jika kita tak bersemangat untuk memasak.
  8. Tempatnya aman karena termasuk daerah latihan TNI-AD Kujang Raider.
  9. Sinyal hape ada walaupun intermiten. Disarankan: Telkomsel.

So, how to get there? It’s easy:

  1. First of all, if we have never been there or if we are not familiar with city of Bogor, please use the Google Map & search ‘Sukamantri Camping Ground’. It’ll show us a few alternative routes & it’ll give us the idea about where it is. Please remember, Bogor is a traffic-jammed city especially during weekends.
  2. If we drive, from wherever we come from, we need to reach the road of Jalan Raya Ciapus. This is what I recommend because it’s clearer & less junctions. If we see the Angkot no 3 Ramayana-Ciapus, then we are on the right track.
  3. We will notice at least two green-square road signs saying the Bumi Perkemahan Sukamantri (Sukamantri Camping Ground). One of the signs tells us to turn left to reach the camping ground.
  4. From the junction, the road becomes narrow but in good condition & straight. An intersection will be in front of us not far, just go straight. The good road will ends after 2km.
  5. A gravel road will follow; ascending & winding for about 2km. Some spots are too narrow for two cars, but majority two vehicles can pass each other. Don’t worry, the road is very empty.
  6. After passing a security portal & a big housing complex on the left (people say it’s owned by the family of Cendana), the road gets worse; from gravel becoming rocky road without asphalt. This is the misled information written in many blogs regarding the bad road condition, preventing many people to visit Sukamantri. In my opinion; yes the road is bad & not comfortable but as long as our car is not a regular sedan, then we can go through with no problem. Of course, keep the low speed to preserve the mood of the passengers aboard.
  7. After 1km, we will reach the Kujang Raider gate before entering the rain forest. Here, the road gets more ascending & winding under the canopy of jungle.
  8. After another 1km, we will reach the entrance post of the Sukamantri camping ground.

Sukamantri 21

Bagaimana menuju ke sana? Gampang saja:

  1. Pertama-tama, jika kita belum pernah ke sana atau jika kita tidak begitu mengenal Bogor, gunakanlah Google Map lalu cari ‘Sukamantri Camping Ground’. Kita akan diberi beberapa pilihan rute & jelas lokasinya berada dimana. Jangan lupa, Bogor biasanya parah oleh kemacetan terutama di akhir pekan.
  2. Jika kita membawa kendaraan, dari arah mana pun kita datang, tujuan kita adalah Jalan Raya Ciapus. Rute ini ini yang saya rekomendasikan karena lebih jelas & tak begitu banyak belokan & pertigaan-perempatan. Jika kita sudah melihat ada Angkot no 3 jurusan Ramayana-Ciapus, maka kita sudah berada di jalan yang benar.
  3. Petunjuk jalan & lokasi berbentuk kotak berwarna hijau akan jelas terlihat. Ikuti saja sampai memberitahukan kita untuk belok kiri ke arah Bumi Perkemahan Sukamantri.
  4. Lepas dari dari jalan raya, jalan menjadi lebih sempit tetapi bagus kondisinya & lurus. Ada satu simpang di depan, ambil jalan terus. Jalan bagus ini akan berakhir sekitar 2km.
  5. Selanjutnya jalan rusak, dilapisi kerikil & aspalnya sudah bertahun-tahun hilang. Jalan akan mulai menanjak & ada beberapa kelokan sepanjang 2km. Sempit tapi cukup untuk dua buah kendaraan berpapasan, namun ada beberapa spot yang lebih sempit lagi sehingga satu kendaraan akan harus mengalah. Walaupun begitu, jalanan sangat sepi. Sangat jarang ada kendaraan dari arah depan.
  6. Lalu kita akan sampai ke portal security & di dekatnya ada sebuah rumah besar dengan halaman luas & latar belakang Gunung Salak yang indah (kata orang itu adalah rumah milik keluarga Cendana). Selepas ini, jalan akan semakin jelek; jalan bebatuan tanpa aspal. Inilah yang banyak ditulis orang di berbagai blog sebagai jalan batu yang sukar dilalui kendaraan & menyebabkan tidak banyak orang mau berkunjung ke Sukamantri. Menurut saya; memang betul jalannya jelek & tidak nyaman tetapi sepanjang kendaraan kita bukan sedan, maka kendaraan apa pun akan dapat melaluinya dengan aman. Tentu saja, jalan pelan-pelan agar penumpang tetap merasa senyaman mungkin.
  7. Setelah 1km, kita akan sampai ke gerbang Kujang Raider sebelum memasuki hutan tropis. Dari sini, jalanan akan semakin menanjak & semakin berkelok-kelok di bawah kanopi hutan.
  8. 1km berikutnya, maka sampailah kita ke gerbang masuk kawasan bumi perkemahan Sukamantri.

  1. Camping – what a silly answer.
  2. Eating – another silly answer.
  3. Any outdoor activities: playing football, volleyball, frisbee, hide-n-seek, tug-o-war, etc.
  4. Trekking: to the near water fall, called Curug Parakan. The distance is only less than 1km but we must use a guide (easily available from one of the warung, the fee is only Rp50,000.00) because of the track conditions: steep uphill, narrow, on the edge of deep cliff on some spots, dense forest, some misled junctions, slippery river bed & rocks. During dry season, the water barely flows, but it’ll be nice during the wet season.
  5. Bonfire – the woods is available for only Rp50,000.00 good enough for a few hours fire during a cold night.
  6. Spotting the endangered Javan hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi). We will need a powerful monoscope for this as the birds are shy.
  7. Outbond – we need to book in advance for them to set up.
  8. Pre-wed, outdoor, nature, family & any other types of photography.
  9. etc.

Apa saja yang dapat dilakukan di sana?

  1. Camping – sebuah jawaban yang nyeleneh.
  2. Makan-makan – lagi-lagi jawaban yang nyeleneh.
  3. Berbagai aktivitas outdoor: bermain bola, bola voli, frisbee, petak-umpet, tarik tambang, dsb.
  4. Trekking: ke air terjun terdekat, yang dinamakan Curug Parakan. Jaraknya dekat, kurang dari 1km saja, tetapi kita harus menggunakan jasa guide (yang gampang tersedia dari salah satu warung makanan & upahnya hanya Rp50 ribu saja) dikarenakan kondisi jalur: banyak tanjakan curam, berdampingan dengan jurang terjal, hutan yang rimbun, terdapat beberapa percabangan yang gampang membuat orang tersesat, jalur sungai kering & bebatuan yang licin. Di musim kering, debit air terjun sangat kecil tetapi akan cukup besar di musim hujan.
  5. Api ungun – kayu bakar dapat dipesan dari warung seharga Rp50ribu, cukup beberapa jam memberi kehangatan di malam yang dingin.
  6. Memperhatikan burung yang hampir punah bernama Elang Jawa (Nisaetus bartelsi). Burung elang berjambul ini dipercayai sebagai cikal burung garuda. Untuk dapat melihatnya di sarang di atas pohon, kita memerlukan sebuah teropong monoscope yang kuat.
  7. Outbond – perlu pemesanan di depan.
  8. Fotografi: pre-wed, outdoor, alam, keluarga & jenis lainnya.
  9. Dan sebagainya.

Sukamantri is very good place to visit using a VW Campervan. The VW bus suspension system performs perfectly on this kind of bad rocky road. Personally I think it’s even better than the modern VW SUV suspension that I drove a week before for surveying. We feel a relatively smooth & comfortable ride along this road. You can set up the camping tent right next to the Campervan. Last time we were there, we made-over the place became a party camping-picnic ground…
Sukamantri adalah tempat yang sangat bagus untuk disambangi dengan VW Campervan. Sistem suspensi VW Bus ini bekerja sempurna di atas jalanan jelek berbatu semacam ini. Secara pribadi saya menilai malahan suspensinya lebih baik daripada suspensi VW SUV yang modern seperti yang saya kendarai seminggu sebelumnya waktu survey lokasi. Kita akan merasakan perjalanan yang cukup halus & nyaman walaupun jalannya sangat jelek. Di lokasi, kita dapat mendirikan tenda tepat di sampingnya. Waktu kami di sana, kami mengubah tempat perkemahan menjadi semacam tempat pesta & piknik.

On July 31, 2003, Volkswagen Beetle was officially discontinued. I’m left with mixed emotions. I’m saddened because a piece of our hobby is officially no more & worried about the future of spare parts supply, but on the other hand, the VW Beetle can now truly become a part of history. Most of us were not alive when VW started building them, but we can all be happy to say we were here when they stopped.
Pada tanggal 31 Juli 2003, Volkswagen Beetle secara resmi dihentikan produksinya. Sebagai seorang pecinta VW, perasaan saya bercampur aduk. Sedih karena salah satu hobby secara resmi diberhentikan & kuatir suku cadang akan hilang di masa depan. Tetapi di sisi lain, VW Beetle sudah tegas menjadi bagian dari sejarah. Hampir semua di antara kita belum lahir pada waktu VW mulai membuatnya, tetapi bolehlah kita semua senang karena kita hadir pada waktu mereka menghentikannya.

I’ll bet you can’t, because for starters, you can’t physically see that far. If you line up end to end all Beetles ever made, your street would be a traffic jam 86,280km long – a quarter of the way to the moon – & stacking them one on top of the other, it would form a pile of Beetles 32,130km high. On the average, one Beetle came off the production line one every 85 seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 58 years. That’s 18,300,044 tons of Beetles, more than 345 HMS Titanics, three Empire State Buildings or the combined average weight of every person in America in 2003.
Hampir mustahil melihat langsung VW Beetle sebanyak 21,529,464 buah. Pergilah keluar, lihat mobil VW Beetle Anda parkir di depan rumah & coba bayangkan ada 21,529,463 mobil sejenis lagi yang parkir di belakangnya. Bisa? Saya pikir tak akan bisa, karena keterbatasan penglihatan kita tak dapat melihat sejauh itu. Jika semua VW Beetle yang sudah pernah dibuat berbaris di jalanan, maka kemacetan dahsyat sepanjang 86,280km akan terjadi – jarak ini sama dengan ¼ jarak bumi ke bulan – & jika ditumpukan satu per satu, maka tumpukannya akan mencapai 32,130km tingginya. Kalau dirata-ratakan, sebuah VW Beetle dibuat dalam waktu hanya 85 detik, non-stop selama 24 jam sehari & 7 hari seminggu selama 58 tahun. Standing one next to another, the tires would stretch from Los Angeles to Calcutta India, 13,590km away, which is twice the length of the Nile River in Africa. There are 688,942,848 fender bolts, three for every person in this country; 86,117,856 pistons, enough to make a pile of pistons 1.6km high, 1.6km wide & 1.6km thick; & 109,117,856 lug nuts, one for every baby born in the world in 2003. If we put these lug nuts end to end, it would be a chain 3,128km long & weight 10,229 tons, more than the Queen Mary.

If we filled up the tanks of all the Beetles, it would drain half of the Lake Ontario, & if we bottled all the oil used in all the Beetles it would fill 40 million wine bottles, nearly twice the oil that was spilled by the Exxon Valdez in 1989. Enough headliner material has been used by VW to cover Manhattan Island almost twice, & line up all the valves side by side & it would stretch from New York across the Atlantic to Paris. If you laid out the VW logo hood ornaments from all the Beetles it would cover 11,515-square meter, enough to completely blanket two football fields, & if you lined them up, it would stretch from Montana to the North Pole.

Though the cargo volume changed periodically through the course of production, they all add up to roughly 6.1 cubic km worth of space, which is equal to the amount of mountain blown off by the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980 (roughly 433m of the summit).
Jika dijumlahkan, maka kapasitas volume tangki bensin Beetle total mencapai 855,838,562 liter.
