1. What is a campervan? – Apakah campervan itu?
(English): Campervan is a van / minibus passenger type vehicle which has been converted to have interior facilities to support outdoor camping activities. The basic facilities would be a bed, a refrigerator, stoves & a sink with plenty of storages to carry equipment, food & drinks.
(Bahasa Indonesia): Campervan adalah kendaraan penumpang jenis minibus yang telah dikonversi terutama interiornya sehingga memiliki beberapa fasilitas untuk membuat  kegiatan camping / berkemah menjadi lebih nyaman & menyenangkan. Fasillitas utama tersebut adalah tempat tidur, kulkas, kompor & tempat cuci piring, juga dengan tempat penyimpanan barang-barang perlengkapan, makanan & minuman.

2. What type of campervans do you have for hire? – Model campervan apakah yang tersedia untuk disewakan?
Our campervans are all original classic Volkswagen Type-2 Transporter (aka VW Kombi), with rear mounted engine, both air-cooled & water-cooled which have been lovingly restored to the highest standards & have retained the original retro look. Currently, there are four campervans available for rent; Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Deep Purple, Vanagon & Pink Floyd. Please click each name to find out more.
Semua kendaraan campervan kami adalah Volkswagen klasik Type-2 Transporter (yang lebih dikenal dengan panggilan VW Kombi), posisi mesin di belakang khas VW, berpendingin udara & juga air, yang telah direstorasi dengan apik & standard yang tinggi untuk tetap mempertahankan citra retronya. 3. Where are the locations where we can do the camping using a campervan in Indonesia? – Di mana lokasi-lokasi di Indonesia kita bisa camping menggunakan campervan?

Basically any sites where we can drive the campervan in & where we are allowed to do the camping. Some examples: (1) Cibubur camping ground (30mins from Jakarta, the closest one), (2) Gunung Pancar camping ground (nearby the Jungleland Adventure Theme Park, Bukit Sentul, 45mins from Jakarta), (3) Gunung Bunder camping ground (around 1.5hr from Jakarta, outskirt of Bogor), (4) Ranca Upas camping ground (about 1.5hr south of Bandung, in Ciwidey area; this is perhaps the coldest camping ground in Indonesia), (5) Cikole camping ground (1hr north of Bandung, in between Tangkuban Parahu Volcano & town of Lembang), (6) Gunung Pancar camping ground (1.5hr south of Bandung, not too far from Banjaran town ), (7) some public & private beaches around Anyer & Carita areas, Banten (about 2-3hr driving from Jakarta), (8) some public beaches at Jatiluhur Dam, Purwakarta (about 2hrs driving from Jakarta), (9) Pangandaran Beach, south-east of West Java (4-5hrs from Jakarta) & (10) Wisata Capolaga, Subang (3hrs driving from Jakarta or 1hr from Bandung). These locations are only in West Java & Banten provinces. We are sure there are many more further in other Java provinces, Bali & Lampung provinces). We will add more some locations along the time.
Pada dasarnya semua lokasi dimana campervan dapat sampai masuk & aktivitas camping diperbolehkan. Beberapa contoh: (1) Bumi Perkemahan & Taman (Buperta) Cibubur (paling dekat dari Jakarta, hanya 30menit), (2) Buper Gunung Pancar (dekat taman rekreasi The Jungleland Adventure Theme Park, Bukit Sentul, 45 menit dari Jakarta), (3) Buper Gunung Bunder (sekitar 1.5 jam dari Jakarta, pinggiran kota Bogor), (4) Buper Ranca Upas (sekitar 1.5 jam di selatan Bandung, di daerah Ciwidey), (5) Buper Cikole (1 jam di utara Bandung, di antara Gunung Tangkuban Parahu & kota Lembang), (6) Buper Gunung Pancar (1.5jam di selatan Bandung, dekat Banjaran) (7) beberapa pantai umum & pribadi di daerah Anyer & Carita, Banten (sekitar 2-3 jam dari Jakarta), (8) beberapa pantai rekreasi di Waduk Jatiluhur, Purwakarta (sekitar 2 jam dari Jakarta), (9) Pantai Pangandaran, sebelah tenggara Jawa Barat (4-5 jam dari Jakarta) & (10) Wisata Capolaga, Subang (3 jam dari Jakarta atau 1 jam dari Bandung). Lokasi-lokasi contoh ini terletak di propinsi Jawa Barat & Banten saja. Kami yakin masih teramat banyak lokasi sejenis di propinsi lainnya di Jawa, Bali, Lampung & lain tempat. 4. Where is Jakarta VW Campervan based? – Di mana lokasi Jakarta VW Campervan?
We are located at Tanjung Mas Raya real-estate complex, South Jakarta – 12530. We are conveniently located just off the JORR toll road, exit at Pasar Minggu, approximately 10 minutes from there. We also are very closed to Tanjung Barat train station, where you can ride the Commuter Line.
Kami berlokasi di komplek Tanjung Mas Raya, Jakarta Selatan – 12530, sekitar 10 menit dari pintu keluar Pasar Minggu, jalan tol JORR. Lokasi kami juga dekat dengan stasiun Commuter Line; Tanjung Barat.

5. How many people do your campervans sleep? – Berapa kapasitas tempat tidur di dalam campervan? 
It is vary. Deep Purple & Red Hot Chilli Peppers vans sleep 2 adults on the rock-n-roll bed conveniently & one small child on the front seats. Actually you can add one more child on the bed but frankly it would reduce the comfort. Vanagon van can take more people; 2-3 people on the rock-n-roll bed & additional 2-3 children in the pop-top roof. Anyhow, if you have more people, then you would need to bring your own tent.
Kapasitas tempat tidur bervariasi, tergantung kendaraannya. Deep Purple & Red Hot Chilli Peppers mempunyai tempat tidur ‘rock-n-roll’ yang sangat nyaman untuk dua orang dewasa sementara satu orang anak balita di kursi depan. Sebetulnya tempat tidur tersebut dapat memuat satu orang anak lagi tetapi kenyamanan akan berkurang. Sementara Vanagon dapat memuat 2-3 orang di tempat tidur ‘rock-n-roll’ & 2-3 orang anak-anak di tempat tidur di dalam atap pop-top. Silahkan Anda membawa tenda sendiri jika lebih banyak orang yang ikut serta. 

6. Do you deliver the camper or do we have to collect it? – Apakah Campervannya dapat dikirim ke tempat penyewa atau harus diambil oleh penyewa?
We prefer you to collect it from us & ask that you give yourself an hour for the handover & likewise for the return. We can provide a delivery service but this would be a special request with possibility additional price which depends on the distance. Just give us a call to discuss.
Kami lebih mengharapkan Anda datang sendiri ke tempat kami untuk mengambil kendaraan. Kami juga meminta waktu sekitar 1 jam untuk handover baik pada saat pengambilan maupun waktu pengembalian. 7. Can we leave our car with you while we’re away? – Apakah boleh meninggalkan kendaraan kami di situ selagi kami pergi menyewa?
Yes, but we don’t provide a dedicated secured parking area for your vehicle. Our residential compound & neighbourhood is actually safe with 24hr security service & there are many empty spaces by the roads that you can park your car safely. However, all vehicles are left at your own risk.
Bisa, tetapi kendaraan Anda akan diparkir di pinggir jalan di dalam komplek, bukan di tempat parkir khusus. Komplek perumahan kami dijaga oleh Satuan Pengaman 24 jam & relatif aman. Walaupun begitu, resikonya tetap ditanggung oleh pemilik kendaraan.

8. Can you collect us from the train station? – Apakah kami bisa dijemput dari stasiun kereta?
Yes, we can collect you from Tanjung Barat train station. This is a special request & would need to be requested at the time of booking. Actually you can use the ojek (motorcycle taxi) for only IDR5,000-10,000. The Tanjung Barat train station is adjacent to the main entrance of the Tanjung Mas Raya compound. Please call us to discuss.
Ya, kami dapat menjemput Anda dari setasiun Commuter Line Tanjung Barat. Hal ini harus dimintakan pada saat pemesanan. Alternatif lain Anda dapat menggunakan jasa ojek dengan ongkos Rp5,000-10,000 saja. Setasiun Tanjung Barat berlokasi tepat di seberang gerbang utama komplek Tanjung Mas Raya di sisi sebelah timur. 9. What time can we collect/return the van? – Jam berapa kami bisa mengambil & mengembalikan kendaraan sewa?
For Daily Hire: collections & returns are at any time after 6am from Monday to Friday. Hiring on Saturday & Sunday will fall under Weekend Hire.
For Weekly Hire: collections & returns are at any time after 6am & any days.
For 2-days Weekend Hire: collections are Saturday’s at any time after 6am & returns are Sunday’s before 6pm.
For 3-days Weekend Hire: collections are Friday’s at any time after 6am. Returns are Sunday’s before 6pm.
Untuk Sewa Harian: pengambilan kendaraan bisa kapan saja di atas jam 6 pagi antara hari Senin sampai Jumat. Penyewaan di hari Sabtu & Minggu akan termasuk Sewa Akhir Pekan.
Untuk Sewa Mingguan: pengambilan kendaraan kapan saja di atas jam 6 pagi & hari apa saja.
Untuk Sewa 2-hari Akhir Pekan: pengambilan pada hari Sabtu di atas jam 6 pagi. Pengembalian di hari Minggu paling lambat jam 6 sore.
Untuk Sewa 3-hari Akhir Pekan: pengambilan pada hari Jumat di atas jam 6 pagi. Pengembalian di hari Minggu paling lambat jam 6 sore.

10. What age do I have to be hire a van? – Adakah batasan umur agar kami bisa menyewa kendaraan?
At any ages, as long as you posses a valid Indonesian citizen identity card; i.e. KTP (Kartu Tanda Penduduk) or any valid nationals passports.
Tak ada batasan umur yang penting Anda harus sudah memliki Kartu Tanda Penduduk yang sah & berlaku.

11. Can I drive the campervan? – Apakah kami diperbolehkan mengemudikan sendiri kendaraan sewa?
Unfortunately not. The main reason is because there is no car insurance available in Indonesia to cover the classic cars like the VW campervans. A driver, who is very familiar in driving a VW van & also familiar to some basic maintenance, will be provided under your cost. This is for everybody’s protection & also for your convenience. We do hope when a car insurance is available, we will definitely let you driving the van.
Maaf, sangat disesalkan Anda belum diperbolehkan mengemudi sendiri Campervan dikarenakan kendaraan kami tidak ada perlindungan asuransi & memang tidak ada perusahaan asuransi yang mau menanggung kendaraan klasik di Indonesia, untuk saat ini. Pengemudi yang berpengalaman & memiliki pengetahuan perawatan dasar VW akan disediakan atas tanggungan Anda. Harapan kami, Anda akan boleh mengendarai Campervan sendiri suatu saat kalau ada perusahaan asuransi yang mau menanggung kendaraan kami.

12. Can we take the camper outside of Java island? – Apakah boleh kendaraan sewa dibawa keluar Pulau Jawa?
For now, you are allowed to travel throughout Java, Madura, Bali island & Lampung province only. For beyond these areas, additional charge will be applicable. Please call us to discuss.
Untuk sekarang, penyewaan kendaraan kami hanya terbatas untuk semua area di Pulau Jawa, Madura, Bali & propinsi Lampung saja. Di luar area ini, tambahan biaya sewa akan dikenakan. Mohon telepon kami untuk mendiskusikannya.

13. How do I make a booking? – Bagaimana caranya memesan?
Call us or send us email to enquire about your preferred dates & once we’ve confirmed availability you will need to complete the deposit in front to secure the booking. Sorry, we don’t have a fax machine.
Mohon beri tahu kami tanggal penyewaan melalui telepon atau imel. Sesudah kami konfirmasi ketersediaan kendaraan, maka deposit pemesanan harus segera dilunasi. Mohon maaf, kami belum mempunyai mesin fax.

14. What is the booking deposit required? – Berapa besar deposit yang diharuskan?
The booking deposit required is 33% of the hire charge. This deposit is non refundable. The hire charge should be paid in full before the collection.
Untuk pemesanan, wajib membayar deposit sebesar 33% dari biaya sewa yang direncanakan. Deposit ini tidak dapat dikembalikan. Biaya sewa harus dilunasi 100% sebelum memulai penyewaan.

15. Is insurance included within the hire charge? – Apakah penyewaan ini termasuk asuransi?
Unfortunately not because such car insurance is not available in Indonesia for classic or oldies cars. The current insurance regulations limit the age of the insured cars to maximum 10 years old. All risks associated with the operation of the car will be under each passenger’s responsibility.
Harga sewa tidak termasuk asuransi karena asuransi untuk kendaraan klasik atau kendaraan tua tidak ada di Indonesia. Peraturan asuransi otomobil membatasi usia kendaraan maksimal 10 tahun. Segala resiko kecelakaan ditanggung oleh penumpang.

16. Are dogs or other pets allowed in the campers? – Apakah hewan peliharaan diperbolehkan dibawa?
As a rule no, sorry.
Mohon maaf, segala jenis hewan peliharaan tidak diperbolehkan dibawa.

17. What are the facilities that the campervan provide? – Fasilitas apa yang tersedia di campervan?
The campervan provides: (1) a sofa bed called rock-n-roll seat; it’s a normal back row seat with lap-type seat belts for two which can be transformed into a bed, (2) a continuous front seat to become a bunk for a child, (3) a single door mini refrigerator including a freezer (yes, the kind you would normally see in a hotel room), (4) two portable gas stoves using butane bottles, (5) a sink with 10-litres of clean water supply using a motorized water pump, (6) a portable table, which can be set inside the cabin or outside the camper, (7) two portable buddy seats, (8) two picnic folding chairs, (9) one picnic folding table, (10) a side rolled awning, (11) a rear rack for two bicycles. (12) a roof rack.
Fasilitas / peralatan di dalam campervan kami: (1) kursi penumpang belakang yang dapat direbahkan menjadi tempat tidur berkapasitas untuk dua orang dewasa, (2) kursi depan yang menyambung sehingga dapat juga dijadikan alas tidur buat seorang anak balita, (3) kulkas mini satu pintu lengkap dengan freezer, (4) dua buah kompor gas portabel berbahan bakar gas butana, (5) tempat cuci piring dengan suplai air bersih sebanyak 10 liter, (6) sebuah meja portabel yang dapat didirikan baik di dalam maupun di luar kabin, (7) dua buah kursi kecil portabel, (8) dua buah kursi piknik lipat, (9) satu buah meja piknik lipat, (10) tenda samping, (11) rak belakang yang dapat memuat dua buah sepeda, (12) rak di atap.

18. What do we need to bring with us? – Barang-barang apa yang harus kami bawa sendiri? 
All you need to bring with you is your personnel belongings; clothes, beddings (e.g. pillows, blankets & bed sheet), sleeping bags, food & drinks, cooking ware, eating utensils, personal medicines, flash light, dish soap, etc.
Yang harus Anda bawa hanyalah perlengkapan pribadi Anda beserta keluarga; pakaian, perlengkapan tidur (bantal, selimut & seprai), sleeping bag, makanan & minuman, peralatan masak, peralatan makan, obat-obatan pribadi, lampu senter, sabun cuci piring, dsb.

19. Do we need to book a campsite in advance? – Apakah perlu untuk memesan tempat kemping di depan?
We would advise that you do. Camping is very popular especially during holiday seasons, so to avoid disappointment always play safe & book in advance. Have a look at our useful links page for some recommended camp-sites.
Kami akan menyarankan Anda untuk melakukan pemesanan tempat camping sebelum hari keberangkatan, terutama di akhir pekan atau musim liburan sekolah. Silahkan mengunjungi tautan situs-situs internet tempat camping.

20. Who shall provide the fuel? – Siapa yang harus menyediakan bahan bakar kendaraan?
The Customer shall provide the fuel. All of our vans run on Premium gasoline. It is advisable not to use Pertamax or similar higher octane gasoline since the classic air-cooled VW engines are not designed for that type of fuel. It is prohibited to store fuel on board due to fire hazard. When returning the campervan to us, please make sure the fuel amount in the tank is the same as before it leaves.
Bahan bakar kendaraan (BBM) ditanggung oleh Penyewa. Semua campervan kami menggunakan bahan bakar bensin Premium. Mesin klasik VW memang tidak didesain untuk bensin beroktan tinggi seperti Pertamax. Menyimpan bahan bakar bensin di dalam campervan tidak diperbolehkan karena berbahaya. Ketika mengembalikan kendaraan, mohon pastikan tangki bensin berisi sama seperti semula.

21. Is a stove provided? – Apakah kompor sudah tersedia?
Yes, there are two portable gas stoves using butane cooking gas. Two butane gas bottles are hooked up to the stoves and will last for your entire road trip. Two butane gas bottles for spare are also provided. Please provide yourself more spares if you think you would need more.
Di dalam campervan tersedia dua buah kompor gas portabel berbahan bakar butana. Dua tabung akan terpasang & dua buah tabung lagi untuk persediaan tambahan. Seharusnya ini cukup untuk keperluan selama perjalanan Anda. Jika dirasa kurang, silahkan Anda membawa sendiri tabung butana tambahan.

22. Can we take our bicycle with us? – Apakah sepeda bisa dibawa?
Yes, for Deep Purple & Red Hot Chilli Peppers vans, you may use the rear mounted bike carrier to carry maximum two bicycles. This will need to be requested at the time of booking. Unfortunately such bike carrier is not available in Vanagon therefore bicycle is unable to be brought out, unless you have a folding bike (seli) & stored inside the cabin.
Anda dapat menggunakan bike carrier di belakang van Deep Purple & Red Hot Chilli Peppers untuk membawa sepeda, maximum dua buah. Jika Anda memerlukannya, mohon beri tahu kami pada saat pemesanan. Sayangnya, bike carrier tersebut tak terdapat di Vanagon, sehingga Anda tak dapat membawa sepeda, kecuali sepeda lipat (seli) yang disimpan di dalam kabin.

23. What are the dimensions of the VW campervans? – Apakah ukuran dari campervan?
About 1.7m external width. 2.3m external height including the roof rack. 5.0m external length including the rear bike carrier. Our camper vans are equipped with a classic style roof rack to store additional cargo. Please make sure you measure the total height before you start the trip & always beware of trees, power lines, telephone lines, portals, low bridges, toll road entrance, etc. along the way.
Ukuran campervan kami: lebar luar sekitar 1.7m, tinggi luar 2.3m termasuk roof rack & panjang luar 5.0m termasuk bike carrier di belakang. Campervan kami dilengkapi roof rack bergaya klasik untuk tempat kargo tambahan. Mohon untuk mengukur tinggi total termasuk kargo di atas sebelum Anda berangkat & selalu perhatikan pohon, kabel listrik & telepon, portal, jembatan yang rendah, pintu masuk gerbang toll, dsb. selama perjalanan.

24. Can the campervans take baby/child seats? – Apakah kami bisa membawa kursi khusus anak-anak?
Yes, but please be aware that our campervans are equipped with two automatic three-point seat belts at the front & two lap-type seat belts at the rear seats. It’s always advisable that children to be seated at the rear.
Ya. campervan kami dilengkapi dengan dua buah seat belt tiga-titik otomatis di kursi depan & dua buah seat belt dua-titik di kursi belakang. Seat belt ini dapat digunakan untuk mengikat kursi bayi / kursi anak Anda. Untuk keselamatan, kami menyarankan anak-anak untuk selalu duduk di kursi belakang.

25. What happens should the campervan break down? – Bagaimana jika campervan mengalami kerusakan ketika disewa? 
Our driver is familiar with basic maintenance & trouble-shooting of the car. Depending on the situation, we will dispatch our mechanic to fix the problem, or we will arrange a tow truck when necessary.
Pengemudi kami mampu untuk melakukan perawatan dasar kendaraan. Tergantung situasi, kami akan mengirimkan mekanik untuk mengatasi masalah atau kalau diperlukan kami akan mengirimkan truk derek.

26. Can you smoke in the campervans? – Apakah merokok diperbolehkan di dalam campervan?
No, all of our vans are non-smoking facility.

Deep Purple is the nickname of a 1979 Volkswagen Type 2 T2 which the has two colours; purple (light) & white. Renovated & painted in new colours recently, he is now look fresher, more comfortable, reliable & safer. He has also new camper interior, similar to Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Deep Purple adalah nama panggilan untuk sebuah Volkswagen Kombi tahun 1979 buatan Jerman. Dipanggil demikian karena warnanya; ungu (muda) & putih. Setelah direnovasi & dicat baru bulan lalu, sekarang campervan ini kelihatan lebih segar, lebih nyaman, handal & aman. Sama seperti abangnya; Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kombi ini punya interior camper yang baru.

This is the last VW Type 2 made in German, which was in 1979. Later, the production continued in Mexico until 1994 & in Brazil until December 2013 (I’m sad…).
Kombi model ini adalah Kombi terakhir buatan Jerman di tahun 1979. Lalu produksi dilanjutkan di Mexico sampai tahun 1994 & di Brazil sampai bulan Desember 2013 (kami sangat sedih mendengarnya).

The wide interior – two buddy seats are available to accommodate more passengers although have no seat belts. These buddy seats are portable & also functioning as storage boxes.

The rear seats with seat belts are actually the so called: “rock-n-roll” bed; you pull it down & it turns into a flat bed, good for two adults or three young kids. Underneath it is an additional storage.

The spare tire is placed outside in front; providing more space inside & more front protection.

This campervan is equipped with louver windows including anti-insects net on both sides, providing better ventilation & fresh air.

A detachable classic design rear rack can accommodate up to two bicycles.

Vanagon is a Volkswagen Type 2 T3, or the 3rd generation of the VW Transporter family. The 1.9 litre engine is still rear-mounted but it’s now water-cooled, instead of air-cooled. It was actually imported in CBU (Completely Built Up) into the country back in 1980s. It’s the only CBU VW campervan unit available for hire in the country. The Campervan design is the Villa 3 model built by a British Holdsworth company.
Vanagon adalah sebuah Volkswagen Type 2 T3 yaitu generasi ketiga dari keluarga VW Transporter. Mesin berkapasitas 1.9 liter masih dipasang di bagian belakang tetapi sekarang telah berpendingin air, bukan berpendingin udara lagi. Kendaraan ini diimpor dalam keadaan utuh (CBU) di tahun 1980-an & merupakan satu-satunya VW Campervan CBU yang terdapat di Indonesia & tersedia untuk disewa. Larger & heavier than its predecessor, the T2, – & with a more squared & less rounded styling – the T3 was manufactured in Germany from 1979 until 1990. – Beda dengan T2, T3 berbobot lebih berat & bentuknya lebih kotak, tidak banyak lekukan. The bed inside the pop-top roof is good enough for 2-3 children or two adults. There are two glass windows on each side providing lights into the roof. The forward control design gives maximum visibility from the driving position and provides high utilisation of the rear space within compact overall dimensions. But with no bonner area forward of the front seats Volkswagen engineers were particularly careful to include a sophisticated body structure. A forked frame floor structure, cross members with vertical struts, longitudinal members and door sections, together with rollover bars integrated in the body all combine to create a complete ‘safety cell’. In the event of an accident, impact energy is first absorbed by the bumper and dissipated throughout a full width deformation element mounted immediately behind it.

Crucial corners, edges and joints are specially coated and sealed. All this means that rust has little chance and quality is assured.

A brief history of the beloved VW campervan The origin of the VW Type II bus began just after World War II in the VW factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. In 1947, a Dutch importer called Ben Pon, noticed that the motorised trolleys used to transport parts around the factory were made from stripped down VW Beetle chassis and running gear, called Plattenwagen. He was inspired by these rather strange looking vehicles to sketch a design of a beetle-based van, which looked not unlike a box on wheels!

A year later, the new chief executive of Volkswagen saw potential in this idea and the first VW van was officially launched at the Geneva Motor Show in November 1949.

By March 1950, ten vehicles a day were being produced. For the next four decades, the basic design remained the same and around five million buses were produced over that time. The Type II with its rear engine and ‘box on wheels’ body, filled a much needed gap in the market providing a simple but sturdy vehicle, that was flexible when it came to transportation but without a high degree of cost.

The unique design of the VW transporter meant that the rear seats could be removed in order to transport greater loads. As the design was so uncomplicated, VW was able to turn out 90 different body combinations over the first five years. These variations included buses, pick-ups, fire engines, ambulances, beer wagons, refrigerated ice-cream vans, milk floats, mobile butchers’ shops, bread vans, mobile grocers, ordinary delivery vans and the well known and loved camper.

The Split From 1949 until 1967, Volkswagen produced the first generation of VW buses in the form of split screens. These ‘splitties’ earned their name due to the split windscreen and also sported a sweeping v-line front. They had a rear air-cooled engine that was simple and reliable. In Indonesia, this type is called as VW Dakota (referring to DC-3 Dakota aircraft which has similar split windscreen) or VW Cancut (referring to the underwear shaped of the V-line front).

During the 18-year production period, there were a great many developments. The original buses were designed to be workhorses and came in Kombi and Panel van models. The microbus was introduced in 1950, and had the famous two-tone paint; nicer upholstery and the big cast aluminium ‘VW’ logo. With 1951 came the introduction of the Westfalia. The name Westfalia came from Westfalia-Werke, the contractor that built the vans, located in the Westphalia region of Germany. The VW camper van proved immensely popular with many features added about this time, including a longer dashboard with radio and clock, and chrome trim on the body. When the VW Camper was released in the USA in the mid 1950’s it was remarkably successful, with over 150,000 sold by 1963! In 1952 the single cab pick-up appeared and in 1954 the engine size increased. About 30 more versions of transporter were available, including the delivery van and ambulance. Four years later saw the introduction of the double cab pick-up. In the meantime, production of the VW bus had moved from Wolfsburg to Hannover. By 1960 the wide-bed pick-up trucks became available on special order and the high roof delivery van was also produced. Flashing indicators also replaced the semaphore. During 1963 the engine size increased to 1500cc from the original 1200cc, and the sliding side door became available as an option. 1967 marked the end of an era with the conclusion of split screen production, with 1,477,330 buses in the marketplace.

The Bay The split-screen was replaced in 1968 by the ‘early bay’ window version. The style of the bay was a radical rethink, with major suspension changes and engines now being fitted with a stabilising ‘back bar’. A one piece windscreen and wind down windows also added to the changes – in fact just about every mechanical part and body panel was changed!

1973 then saw the introduction the ‘late bay’. This saw changes in the ‘wrap around’ style bumpers being replaced with the square style, front indicators being moved up to the new grille, and with the option of larger engine sizes (1600cc, 1700cc, 1800cc and 2000cc) the buses became far more reliable.

It was really the bay that made the ‘camper’ such a triumph. The Bay as a van was larger than the previous ‘Splitty’, and these were converted by various firms such as Devon, Viking, Danbury, Dormobile and Westfalia. These firms offered different interior configurations for sleeping, storage and cooking as well as various types of roof. These ranged from straight up vertical pop tops, to front, side and rear hinging. The last bay was produced in 1979. This also marked the end of the famous VW air-cooled engine as the next generations of campers would have engines that were water cooled. Between August 1967 and July 1979, the production line had rolled out 3,292,272 bay window vans.

The T25 and T4 were produced over the following years, and the subsequent T5 is continuing the massive success the of the VW camper. The Splitty and the Bay were truly iconic vans that represented an era of freedom and fun. That is why we restore them and cherish them – they are history on wheels and memories of childhood days gone by.
