Volkswagen introduced vans in 1950. The model was officially called Type 2; i.e. the model number 2 after Type 1 sedan, a.k.a. Beetle. The first generation of Type 2 is called T1; a.k.a. Splitbus due to split windscreen. T stands for Transporter. T1 was made from 1950 to 1967. The 2nd generation was made from 1967 to 1979 & called T2. Later on T3 (1979-1992), T4 (1990-2003) & the 5th generation T5 (2003-present). These are the five generations of VW Bus.
Volkswagen mulai membuat vans (minibus) di tahun 1950. Modelnya dinamakan Type 2; yaitu model kedua setelah Type 1 sedan alias Beetle (VW Kodok).  Generasi pertama Type 2 diberi nama T1, atau VW Dakota yang terkenal karena kaca depannya yang terbelah dua mirip pesawat DC-3 Dakota. Huruf T berarti Transporter. T1 diproduksi dari tahun 1950 sampai 1967. Menyusul T2 sebagai generasi kedua dari tahun 1967 sampai 1979.  Diikuti T3 (1979-1992), T4 (1990-2003) & terakhir T5 (2003-sekarang). Ini adalah kelima generasi dari VW Bus.

This article is telling a story about the last T2 made in German, the ultimate version, which was made in 1979; so called 1979 Bus or 1979 Kombi. The article is taken from the official Volkswagen marketing brochures & flyers. Our Deep Purple Campervan is a 1979 Kombi.
Tulisan ini berisi informasi tentang Kombi tahun 1979, yaitu model T2 terakhir buatan Jerman & yang terbaik di generasinya, yang diambil dari berbagai brosur pemasaran Volkswagen. Campervan Deep Purple kami adalah Kombi 1979.

From 1951 to 1979, Volkswagen have built some two million Bus & Campmobile Bus, each year making gradual improvements & changes, and then improving the improvements. And all the while, concentrating on the basics; economy, performance, utility & safety.
Dari tahun 1951 sampai 1979, Volkswagen telah memproduksi sekitar 2 juta buah Kombi & Campervan. Setiap tahunnya perbaikan & perubahan terus dilakukan secara gradual & perbaikan itu lalu diperbaiki lagi. Semuanya dikonsentrasikan ke hal-hal yang mendasar; ekonomi, performans, kegunaan & keamanan.

Over the years, we’ve enlarged the interior of the Bus & made it more & more comfortable. To improve visibility, the size of the windows has been increased. For better stopping, we’ve incorporated front disc-brakes & large drum brakes in back.
Bertahun-tahun, interior Kombi sudah diperbesar & membuatnya semakin nyaman. Untuk memperbaiki ruang pandang, ukuran jendela sudah dibuat lebih besar. Untuk pengereman kendaraan yang lebih baik, rem cakram telah dipasang di roda depan & rem tromol besar di roda belakang.

The size & horsepower of the engine have been increased to make the Bus more peppy. And for a quiet ride, we’ve added hydraulic valve lifters. AFC fuel injection has replaced the carburetor for easier starts, smoother acceleration & more efficient use of fuel.
Ukuran & tenaga mesin juga sudah ditingkatkan untuk membuat Kombi semakin garang. Dan untuk mengurangi kebisingan, kami telah menambah katup pengangkat hidrolik. Sistem injeksi bahan bakar AFC telah menggantikan sistem karburator agar mesin lebih mudah dinyalakan, akselerasi yang lebih halus & lebih hemat bahan bakar.

According to the 1978 EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency) estimates, the Bus gets 25mpg on the highway & 17mpg in the city. Of course your actual mileage may vary depending on how & where you drive, your Bus’ condition & whether you choose optional equipment such as an automatic transmission.
Menurut EPA (Badan Perlindungan Lingkungan AS), Kombi 79 dapat menempuh jarak 10.6km/liter di jalan bebas hambatan atau 7.2km/liter di dalam kota. Tentu saja hal ini tergantung kepada lokasi & cara Anda mengemudi, kondisi kendaraan & jenis transmisi manual atau otomatik.

Step to side of the Bus & you’ll find a really grand opening – a sliding door that moves back to reveal a doorway measuring 41″ x 48″. In the back of the Bus you’ll find a large rear hatch. So you can actually load the vehicle from both ends.

For big jobs, you can fold down the rear seat & practically double the cargo area. And for really big jobs, simply slips out the two rear seats & you’ll have as much clear deck area as a small truck – plenty of room for such large items as washing machine or chest of drawers.

What is it about Type II that grabs us? Anyone who loves Volkswagen can tell you that they have a favorite model. It might be a Beetle that gives them goose bumps, or a lovely Karmann-Ghia or a rare coach built model.
Apa sih menariknya VW Type II? Semua pecinta VW punya model favorit masing-masing. Misalnya VW Beetle (VW Kodok) yang katanya membuat merinding, atau Karmann-Ghia yang cantik atau juga karoseri VW khusus yang sangat langka.

VW Type II T2 1979…

However, Kombi (one of the VW Type II nicknames) owners are a special group. You have to enjoy sitting behind the wheel & watching the pavement slip beneath you. You can’t be spoiled by wimpy comforts like heat or air-conditioning – in a Kombi the air-conditioning consists of two wide-open windows &, rarely, an unclogged roof vent. You must also like the feel of flat steering wheel, like a bus or truck, & you should be between 163cm & 179cm because anything different just can’t sit comfortably in the (non-adjustable) seat. It is helpful to also enjoy the attention you & your old Type II will get – because you will get noticed & not always in a good way. Just try climbing a hill with a row of gas-guzzle SUVs behind you.
Yang jelas, pemilik Kombi (salah satu nama panggilan VW Type II) termasuk kelompok orang yang spesial. Anda harus bisa menikmati duduk di belakang kemudi & melihat permukaan jalan langsung di bawah Anda. Anda tak bisa bermanja-manja minta AC atau pun pemanas udara – di dalam Kombi ACnya terdiri dari dua jendela terbuka lebar & saluran angin di langit-langit yang seringnya tersumbat. Anda juga harus menyukai roda kemudi yang posisinya hampir horizontal mirip bis atau truk. Tinggi Anda harus di antara 163cm & 179cm. Kurang atau lebih dari ini akan membuat Anda tidak nyaman duduk di kursi yang tak dapat diatur posisinya. Anda akan mendapat banyak perhatian orang lain di jalan, baik kepada Anda sendiri ataupun ke Kombinya & perhatian ini tidak selalu positif. Anda pasti punya pengalaman mengemudi Kombi di tanjakan, gaspoll tapi mobil merayap pelan, sementara di belakang kita ada kendaraan SUV besar yang akan meraung-raung atau menglakson tak sabar.

If you ask a VW Lover about when & how he/she fell in love with VW, then you will find a more romantic answer. I fell in love with VW Kombi when I was in Junior High School circa 80s. Our school bus at that time was a 1979 VW Kombi. I remember, in many occasions the Kombi was full of children, too full around 20 of them. The rear baggage door was kept opened & some children sat above the engine compartment. At the same time, my father had a 1974 VW Beetle, yellow color with a sun roof that was operated by a lever located on the ceiling near the interior mirror. For the very first time I learned how to drive a car using that Beetle. I drove illegally around inside the complex only, was not dare to go outside. Unfortunately I don’t have any photographs of those two VW Kombi & Beetle to be shown here.
Kalau Anda bertanya ke pecinta VW; kapan & bagaimana mulai jatuh hati ke VW, maka jawabannya akan banyak romantismenya. Saya mulai jatuh hati ke VW Kombi di masa SMP di tahun 80-an. Bis sekolah kami waktu ini adalah sebuah VW Kombi tahun 1979. Saya ingat, tidak jarang VW Kombi tersebut dijejali sampai mungkin dua puluhan orang. Pintu bagasi belakang sampai dibuka & beberapa orang anak duduk di atas mesin di belakang. Pada waktu yang sama, Ayah saya mempunyai VW Kodok buatan tahun 1974 berwarna kuning. Saya ingat atapnya dapat dibuka menggunakan engkol yang terletak berdekatan dengan kaca spion dalam. Untuk pertama kalinyalah saya belajar mengemudi mobil menggunakan VW Kodok tersebut. Beberapa kali saya berputar-putar komplek tempat kami tinggal mengemudikan VW Kodok secara illegal, tanpa SIM. Sayang, saya tak punya foto Kombi & Kodok yang penuh kenangan tersebut untuk diperlihatkan di sini.

Type II T1 1963

Once I was driving my Kombi every day (legally this time) it wasn’t long before I began noticing other Type IIs. It didn’t matter to me whether it was a Van, or a Pickup or a Panel Van, all of them had the same appeal: the face! They were all giant, benign friends, almost like pets, they became part of the family in a way that a mere automobile never had before. No one care that they had the aerodynamics of a small building. No one cared that they were so under powered that iceberg probably moved faster. Folks that cared about things like acceleration & cornering didn’t buy Type IIs & were immune to the Kombi mystique. But those of us who own them knew they were special then & know the loyalty of a well cared-for VW.
Ada masanya saya mengemudikan Kombi saya hampir tiap hari (& legal kali ini), saya mulai makin mengenal model Type II lainnya. Saya tidak peduli apakah modelnya van, pickup ataupun panel van, semuanya mempunyai faktor sama yang membuatnya menarik; yaitu tampangnya! Para pemiliknya datang dari berbagai macam latar belakang melekat menjadi satu keluarga besar. Tak ada pemilik yang mempermasalahkan aerodinamik Kombi yang sama dengan sebuah bangunan kecil. Tak ada juga yang peduli akan tenaganya yang kekecilan sehingga bergeraknya lebih pelan daripada gunung es di lautan. Orang yang senang akan kecepatan & senang menikung tak akan pernah membeli Type II & imun terhadap mistis Kombi. Tetapi untuk kita-kita pemiliknya tahu bahwa mobil ini special & sadar akan kesetiaannya jika kita rawat baik-baik.

Part of their almost cult-like appeal has to be due to their undying determination & affection for their owner. This trait seems peculiar to Volkswagen, because I have never had a single car of any other make try as hard to please me as my VWs do. Once a Kombi becomes yours, it will usually do its best not to let you down while on the road. It has been mystical experience of many people that sometimes it will actually ‘save’ a breakdown, until you are nearly home or in the driveway. They seem to try to plan the best possible place & time for their failure. What Kombi nut among us has not driven without the clutch or maybe a throttle linkage or (gasp) brakes?
Salah satu alasan kenapa kita ‘memuja’ Kombi adalah karena mobil ini memiliki keteguhan hati & kasih sayang yang tak pernah pudar terhadap pemiliknya. Mungkin ini sudah menjadi sifat sebuah mobil VW, karena saya tak pernah mempunyai mobil merek lain yang selalu berusaha keras menyenangkan hati saya sebagai pemiliknya. Begitu sebuah Kombi menjadi milik Anda, maka mobil ini akan berusaha sebaik mungkin untuk tidak mengecewakan Anda di jalan raya. I have loved VWs for so long I honestly don’t remember any other way of life & now I have been in this hobby for a while I’m drawn to any Type II, not just my own. I think it must be due to the fact that mine isn’t the only special one – they are all special. For Type II lovers, they all reach out to us, call to us, stare unblinkingly at us though those big, puppy eyes & we respond. I stare back; I admire the smooth sleek sides, I stick my head in the window & breathe in that strange VW-only smell. And yes, I talk to them (but don’t tell anybody). I love them all & I think that possibly the single most endearing thing about Type II is that they love back.
Saya sudah sangat lama mencintai VW sampai jujur saya tak punya cara hidup yang lain. Saya menyenangi hobby ini untuk setiap VW Type II, bukan hanya milik saya. Saya pikir mungkin karena bukan hanya milik saya saja yang spesial, melainkan semuanya spesial. Untuk para pecinta Type II, semua Kombi menghampiri kami, semuanya memanggil kami, juga semuanya menatap kami tanpa berkedip lewat kedua matanya yang besar & kami membalasnya. Saya menatap balik, saya mengagumi bodynya yang mulus & licin, saya masukan kepala saya ke melewati jendelanya & menghirup udara & baunya yang khas VW. Dan benar, saya berbicara kepada mereka (tetapi mohon jangan bilang siapa-siapa). Saya mencintai mobil ini & saya pikir mungkin hal yang paling menawan dari Type II yaitu mereka ternyata mencintai kita balik. Kita tak bertepuk sebelah tangan.

They lie on their backs in oil, get pulled from side to side by their brakes and greet steep hills with a nervous sigh but when you are truly in love nothing really matters. They are the first to admit their “Combis” stop badly, weigh a ton, are underpowered and prone to electrical failure – but despite the faults, they remain a magnetic pull.

VW Type II, particularly the rarer T1, with split-screen models, have become increasingly collectable. Good examples in Europe fetch about £13,000 and the best upwards of £25,000. Pretty much similar as in Indonesia, though it’s very rare. The today records high was a 1955 23-windows Type II T1 Samba Deluxe sold for $235k in late 2014.
VW Type II, terutama T1 berkaca depan terpisah (di Indonesia disebutnya VW Dakota) yang sudah langka semakin hari diburu para kolektor. Harganya di Eropa berkisar antara Rp260juta sampai Rp500juta. Harga yang mirip juga berlaku di Indonesia, walau sangat jarang ada VW Dakota yang dijual. Rekor tertinggi sampai hari ini adalah sebuah Dakota 1955 23-windows Samba Deluxe yang dilelang seharga hampir Rp3milyar di penghujung tahun 2014.

The VW Kombi began life as a wagon to carry panels around VW’s car plant in Wolfsburg, until it was spotted in the late 1940s by Dutch importer Ben Pon. He made sketches based on the vehicle then struck a deal with engineers to develop them – spawning the first model complete with cylindrical headlights, split windscreen and famous circular logo.
VW Kombi lahir dari sebuah kendaraan bak pengangkut plat panel di pabrik Wolfsburg ketika dilirik oleh seorang importir Belanda bernama Ben Pon di akhir tahun 1940an. Beliau membuat sketsa dari model kendaraan tersebut & berhasil disetujui oleh pihak pabrik untuk dibuat – lalu melahirkan model pertama lengkap dengan lampu depan yang silindris, kace depan terpisah & logo bundar yang terkenal.

Even though they are iconic and cool vehicles, it’s function not form that really sets them apart from other classics. We use it as a family camper, a run around, a parts hauler and for VW shows… and I love every minute. The media has driven much of the interest, along with renewed interest in 60s and 70s music, and surf wear. More than anything else, I value the friendships and camaraderie I have developed with fellow enthusiasts. VW drivers famously acknowledge each other on the road with a special wave or sign – an open hand with the three middle fingers folded to the palm, or just pressing the horn.
Walau VW Kombi sudah menjadi sebuah ikon & kendaraan yang disukai, tetapi sebetulnya fungsinya yang tak terbatas lah yang membuatnya berbeda dengan kendaraan klasik yang lain. Kendaraan ini digunakan untuk camping sekeluarga, atau jalan-jalan berkeliling, mengangkut berbagai jenis barang & untuk ditampilkan di pameran VW…& saya menyenanginya setiap saat. Media masa juga ikut berperan diiringi oleh berkembangnya pop musik tahun 60 & 70an & juga mode pakaian untuk surfing. Lebih dari segalanya, pertemanan & persahabatan antar penggemar yang paling bernilai menurut saya. Para pengemudi VW sudah terkenal untuk saling bertegur sapa di jalan dengan cara melambai tangan atau mengacungkan tangan dimana tiga jari tengah dilipat, atau sekedar membunyikan klakson.

In this 2015, there will be at least 13 Volkswagen shows in Indonesia. The biggest one will be the annual National Jamboree held in 25-26 April 2015, in Carnival Beach, Ancol, Jakarta. The other big event is Yogyakarta VW Festival, 20-22 November 2015 in Yogyakarta. Introducing to you our first campervan fleet member. His name is Red Hot Chili Peppers, a 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 T1, aka Split bus aka VW Dakota (that’s what Indonesians call it referring to the DC-3 Dakota aircraft which has similar split-windscreen). Although he is more than a half-century years old, he has much newer 1700cc engine with a double carburetors which give him sufficient powerful HP,  an AC, a newer frame & suspension systems. He got the camper interior just recently in July 2014.

Perkenalkan anggota pertama dari armada campervan kami. Kami menamakannya Red Hot Chili Peppers, sebuah Volkswagen Type 2 T1 buatan tahun 1963, alias Split bus, alias VW Dakota (nama Dakota ini hanya dikenal di Indonesia merunut ke pesawat terbang DC-3 Dakota yang kaca depannya terpisah & kelihatannya mirip). Walaupun umurnya sudah lebih dari setengah abad, campervan ini mempunyai mesin 1700cc yang jauh lebih baru lengkap dengan karburator ganda yang memberikan tenaga lebih besar, mempunyai pendingin udara (AC), rangka & sistem suspensi yang lebih baru. Interior campernya dipasang baru-baru di bulan Juli 2014.

This beautiful wedding car is actually RHCP. Cream color cutting sticker was used to cover the whole bottom-half part, transforming it to become a different look car.

The year of 2015 was still young. In the middle of rain season, we were very lucky to have several fine & bright days. The children were still in school holiday. So why don’t we go for a quick camping? Quick means just one night & not far from Jakarta. So there we went to Gunung Pancar camping ground. Located in outskirt of Sentul City, Bogor. It took us only about one hour to reach there from our house in South of Jakarta. Thanks to JORR toll road connecting to Jagorawi toll road.
Masih di awal tahun 2015, di tengah-tengah musim hujan, kami merasa beruntung mendapat beberapa hari yang cerah. Anak-anak masih liburan akhir tahun sekolah. Kami pikir kenapa tidak pergi camping ? Cukup satu malam saja & tidak jauh dari Jakarta. Maka segeralah kami pergi ke bumi perkemahan Gunung Pancar. Lokasinya di pinggiran Sentul City, Bogor. Dari rumah kami di Jakarta Selatan, cukup satu jam kami sudah tiba di lokasi, berkat jalan tol JORR & Jagorawi. 

The route to get there is simple: From Jagorawi toll road, exit in Sentul City toll gate. Turn left & follow Sentul City main road (i.e. Jalan MH Thamrin). After about 3-4km ascending road & a bit descending, it will reach the big roundabout & Sentul Nirwana estate sign. Turn left here & before the entrance gate of The Jungle Land amusement park, turn right. Starting from here, the road gets worse & going uphill. About 2-3km you will reach the camping ground ticketing gate.
Rute menuju ke sana mudah. Dari Jagorawi, keluar di pintu tol Sentul City. Belok kiri di pertigaan & ikuti saja jalan utama Sentul City (yaitu Jl. MH Thamrin namanya). Sesudah sekitar 3-4km jalan tanjakan & sedikit turunan, maka sampailah ke bundaran besar dengan tulisan Sentul Nirwana. Belok kiri di sini & sebelum gerbang masuk taman rekreasi The Jungle Land, belok kanan. Dari sini, Anda akan temui jalanan aspal yang kurang terawat & terus menanjak. Sekitar 2-3km akan sampailah di gerbang masuk bumi perkemahan. 

Only for visiting, not camping, the fee is Rp5k/pax & Rp5k/car. For camping, it varies. The best camping ground is the A-block & the fee is Rp100k/pax/night. We managed to negotiate down to Rp80k per adult & Rp70k per child. Car is included.
Tiket masuk tanpa camping adalah Rp5ribu/orang & Rp5ribu/mobil. Untuk camping, harganya bervariasi. Untuk bumi perkemahan blok-A, harga pertiket adalah Rp100ribu/orang/malam. Kami berhasil bernegosiasi & harga tiket turun menjadi Rp80ribu/dewasa & Rp70ribu/anak sudah termasuk kendaraan.

The access road to A-block…

The good things about A-block are the large well-maintained flat lawn field, new toilet & bathing facilities (2 men & 2 ladies including sitting & squatting type toilets), not far from the management & security office so it’s more secure during night time, lightings are provided, including 220V power outlets, no village access road so it’s not noisy with passing by motorcycles nor villagers. The access road is mixed gravel, rocks & dirts but relatively flat, no steep ascending. The area is still pretty clean. The management provided large garbage plastic bags nearby our spot.
Kelebihan blok-A adalah adanya lapangan rumput yang terawat, fasilitas toilet & kamar mandi yang relatif baru (ada 2 untuk pria & 2 untuk wanita lengkap dengan toilet duduk & jongkok), letaknya tidak jauh dari kantor pengurus & sekuriti sehingga tempatnya relatif lebih aman khususnya di malam hari, lampu penerangan (lampu sorot) disediakan termasuk colokan listrik PLN 220V, tak ada jalan akses ke perkampungan sehingga tak berisik oleh lalu-lalang motor atau penduduk. Jalan masuknya campuran, bebatuan, kerikil & tanah yang relatif datar, tak ada tanjakan yang terjal. Areanya relatif masih bersih. Pengurus menyediakan tas sampah plastik besar di dekat camp kami.

We love this Gunung Pancar because it’s not far from Jakarta, good access roads, maintained pine forest & moderate elevation; only about 400-500m asl, not too hot & not too cold, almost perfect.
Kami sekeluarga sangat menyenangi Gunung Pancar karena lokasinya tidak jauh dari Jakarta, kondisi jalan yang baik, hutan pinus yang terjaga & elevasinya yang moderat; yaitu sekitar 400-500m dpl sehingga udaranya tidak panas & tidak dingin.

It was a windy day & the pine trees generating whirling & tweeting sound, a kind of natural noise which is not available in the cities.
Hari itu cukup berangin. Pergerakan & pergesekan pepohonan pinus & angin menimbulkan suara khas yang tak pernah terdengar di kota-kota.
