Partying the 17th Birthday in Style
This extraordinary friend of mine, who has the Volkswagen Town in his house & a double sliding 1977 VW Kombi, has a daughter who was about to turn to 17 years old. The daughter, Ariane (named after the European space rocket), wanted to have an outdoor BBQ style party with a VW Campervan, celebrating it with her friends.
Kawan saya yang memilliki Volkswagen Town & sebuah VW Kombi 77 dengan dobel pintu geser (masih ingat ?) mempunyai seorang putri yang berulang tahun ke 17. Namanya Ariane, diambil dari nama roket luar angkasa Eropa. Ariane punya ide untuk mengadakan pesta ulang tahun barbekyuan di halaman rumahnya dengan kehadiran sebuah VW Campervan.

Camping with Rookies at Sukamantri
This was the 3rd time we did camping at Sukamantri camping ground this year. This time we brought a college friend with his family, who have never been in camping before. An important message I got previously from him; the camping must be successful to secure the family’s interest in camping in the future. Otherwise, they won’t go camping anymore & his effort will fail. He realizes an escalating problem to his family that his two kids are addicted in playing gadgets & spending weekend time in shopping malls. Doing outdoor activities in the nature seems don’t attract them. Well I said, this is a common family problem today where gadgets are affordable, shopping malls are convenient & lack of information regarding good camping locations. After all, so many people still think that camping is a complicated & miserable activity. Hahaha… not anymore my friend. Now, we can do camping much easier, less complicated & much more convenient & relaxing. The key word is: preparation.
Ini kali ketiga kami camping di Sukamantri di tahun ini. Kali ini, kami membawa tiga keluarga yang belum pernah camping sebelumnya, termasuk keluarga kawan kuliah dulu. Kawan ini berpesan supaya acara campingnya sukses agar keluarganya tidak kapok & mau camping lagi di lain waktu. Kalau gagal, maka tidak akan ada lagi acara camping keluarga. Beliau menyadari ada problem yang akan terus bertambah besar di dalam keluarganya yaitu kedua anaknya sudah adiktif ke gajet & maunya hanya bermain ke mal di akhir pekan. Beraktivitas di luar & berinteraksi dengan alam sepertinya tidak menarik minat mereka. Komentar saya, ini sudah menjadi masalah umum di banyak keluarga karena gajet sudah gampang didapat, mal-mal telah menjadi tempat yang nyaman untuk dikunjungi & kurang informasi tentang tempat camping yang bagus. Juga, masih banyak orang yang menilai bahwa camping adalah aktivitas yang menyusahkan & malahan membawa derita. Hahaha… tidak lagi Bro. Sekarang, kita dapat melakukan aktivitas camping dengan jauh lebih mudah, tidak menyusahkan, lebih nyaman & membuat kita rileks. Kata kuncinya adalah: persiapan.
Below are five tips that I did to overcome the challenges & to ensure the camping trip was successful:
Berikut lima tips untuk mengatasi tantangan tersebut & untuk memastikan acara campingnya sukses:
First of all, we use a tool to help; that is a Campervan. We make camping become a convenient thing to do. A campervan provides you a more convenient & softer mattress. It insulates you better against the cold night air. It protects you more from the environment. It gives you more security while you sleep. Bottom line, we can sleep much better inside a campervan than a tent.
Pertama-tama; gunakanlah alat bantu, yaitu: Campervan. Kita membuat camping menjadi aktivitas yang nyaman. Campervan menyediakan alas tidur yang lebih empuk & nyaman. Campervan bisa menjaga suhu ruangan lebih hangat di waktu malam. Di dalam campervan, kita akan lebih terlindungi dari lingkungan luar & juga lebih aman. Singkatnya, tidur di campervan akan lebih nyaman daripada tidur di dalam tenda.
The campervan also provides you with basic facilities we need during camping. Nowadays cooking is much simpler than the old days. Thanks to the portable gas stoves using a butane gas canister. It’s easy to operate & the gas canister is relatively cheap & easy to get. The fire is clean & hot. It won’t leave dark carbon ash mark on the bottom of your cooking ware which hard to wash. The portable stove means you can cook basically anywhere you like to. During a regular day, most of people like to cook outside, but when it rains, then you can cook inside the campervan.
Campervan menyediakan fasilitas-fasilitas basik yang diperlukan saat bercamping. Dewasa ini kegiatan memasak menjadi jauh lebih mudah dibanding dulu. Ini berkat kompor gas portabel menggunakan tabung gas butana. Pengoperasiannya mudah, tabung gasnya mudah diperoleh & relatif murah harganya. Apinya bersih, panas & tidak akan meninggalkan jelaga hitam di alas alat masak. Karena portabel, kompornya dapat digunakan untuk memasak di mana saja. Umumnya orang akan memasak di luar, tetapi ketika hujan, memasak dapat dilakukan di dalam campervan.
The campervan has a water tap with running clean water. You can wash your hands with soap before you eat. You can brush your teeth conveniently at night before you sleep. You can wash your eating utensils & cooking ware without having to walk a few hundred meters to the nearest water source to do it.
Di dalam campervan juga terdapat washtafel dengan kran air. Washtafel in dapat digunakan untuk mencuci tangan, pakai sabun, sebelum makan atau untuk menyikat gigi di waktu malam sebelum tidur dengan lebih nyaman. Washtafel juga dapat digunakan untuk mencuci piring, tanpa harus jalan kaki jauh ke tempat air.
There is a refrigerator inside, in case you want to keep your food cold. Anyhow, we don’t use it often on site since usually the air is cold enough & we don’t need to keep the raw food overnight.
Sebuah kulkas terdapat di dalam campervan. Kulkas ini dapat digunakan untuk menyimpan makanan. Umumnya kulkas ini tidak begitu diperlukan karena udara di tempat camping biasanya sudah dingin & tidak diperlukan untuk menyimpan makanan semalam.
During camping, you really want to minimize to use the gadget, but cell phones have to be ready at anytime. The campervan provides a 220V AC power when the cell phone needs recharging. Thanks to its inverter.
Selama camping, usahakan untuk mengurangi menggunakan gajet walau ponsel tetap harus aktif. Campervan menyediakan suplai listrik AC 220V melalui alat inverter yang dapat digunakan untuk mengisi ulang batere ponsel.
There is plenty of room inside & outside a campervan which means you have more liberty to bring more cargo; chairs, tables, bags, food, water, etc. These cargo can help your camping become more convenient.
Ruangan di dalam campervan cukup luas yang membuat kita dapat lebih leluasa membawa berbagai jenis barang; kursi, meja, makanan, minuman, dsb. Barang-barang inilah yang juga dapat membantu camping kita menjadi lebih nyaman.
So here we are; camping with three families who were about to experient camping for the very first time. One family has 5 members, including three kids; one is an early teenager & two below ten. The 2nd family has two teenager kids. The 3rd; only the mother & her early teenager son. Another friend, this one is experienced in camping, brought his below ten son & his 2 years old daughter. On top of that, they were two drivers & a campervan driver. I brought two campervans. According to my calculation, they were 17 people total.
Jadi sampailah kami di lokasi camping bersama-sama tiga keluarga yang belum pernah camping. Salah satu keluarga beranggota lima orang, termasuk satu ABG & dua anak-anak di bawah 10 tahun. Keluarga kedua terdiri dari tiga orang termasuk dua ABG. Keluarga ketiga; hanya ibunya & ABG cowok. Kawan kuliah lainnya, yang ini sudah cukup pengalaman camping, membawa dua anak termasuk yang masih usia 2 tahun. Disamping itu, ada dua driver & satu driver campervan. Saya membawa dua campervan. Menurut perhitungan, semuanya total ada 17 orang di rombongan.
Second; to accommodate these people, I had to rent three tents plus two of my own tents. Two more tents were brought individually. This was part of the preparation. I had to find out how many people would go in more details; adults, boys, girls & drivers.
Kedua; untuk mengakomodasi semuanya, saya harus menyewa tiga tenda tambahan di samping dua tenda yang saya bawa sendiri. Dua tenda lainnya di bawa masing-masing keluarga. Ini adalah bagian dari persiapan. Saya harus mengetahui dengan pasti berapa orang yang ikut dengan lebih detil: dewasa, anak-anak, cowok atau cewek & driver.
Third; get a best spot on the camping ground. At Sukamantri, the area which we can bring in our campervans is very limited, unless you drive a 4×4 car. We wanted the campervans to get inside the camping ground. At that time, I also knew that during a long weekend, the camping ground would be crowded normally (I was right). Therefore I left Jakarta very early, earlier than common people. Also to avoid traffic jam in Bogor. The result was paid-off. We got the best camping spot; near the parking lot & accessible for the campervans. Only 10 minutes later after we got there, a group of camper arrived. Their camping location was a bit further, far from the parking lot & accessible only to high ground-clearance vehicles. If we were late only for 10 minutes, it would have been an opposite story.
Ketiga; dapatkan posisi terbaik di camping ground. Di Sukamantri, tempat di mana mobil dapat masuk ke area camping sangatlah terbatas, kecuali kendaraannya 4×4. Campervan kami harus bisa masuk ke area camping. Pada waktu itu, saya pun menyadari bahwa di akhir pekan yang panjang, tempat camping akan sangat padat (ternyata saya betul). Maka sayapun meninggalkan Jakarta lebih pagi. Ini pun juga untuk menghindari kemacetan lalu lintas di Bogor. Hal ini membuahkan hasil. Kami mendapatkan posisi yang sangat bagus, mungkin yang terbaik; dekat dengan tempat parkir mobil & kedua campervan dapat masuk. Hanya 10menit berselang, ada grup orang lain yang tiba. Mereka hanya dapat mengambil tempat yang lebih jauh & hanya dapat dimasukin kendaraan yang tinggi. Kalau saja kami terlambat tiba di lokasi hanya 10 menit, ceritanya akan berbeda.
Fourth; bring plenty of food. Most of children can be calmed down with food. At least 50% of the time we spend on camping is cooking & eating. No matter how taste the food is, eating at camping ground always tastes better. This is actually pretty danger for our diets. Hahaha…
Keempat; bawalah banyak makanan. Umumnya anak-anak akan lebih tenang kalau perut tak lapar. 50% dari waktu kita di camping adalah memasak & makan. Di lokasi camping, biasanya semua makanan akan berasa enak. Sebetulnya ini cukup berbahaya kalau kita sedang diet makan. Hahaha…
Fifth; arrange some activities to avoid boredom. For example, we did hiking to a nearby water fall, led by a local guide. At night, we set up a bonfire; something always be demanded by kids.
Kelima; usahakan berbagai macam aktivitas untuk mencegah kebosanan. Contohnya, kami berhiking ke lokasi air terjun terdekat, dipimpin seorang guide lokal. Di waktu malam, kami menyalakan api ungun; sesuatu yang pasti dicari anak-anak & tanpanya acara camping akan menjadi hambar.
That was during a long weekend before the independence-day holiday. Sukamantri camping ground was unusually very crowded. The night was noisy, not a calm night. It had not been raining for a few months. Running spring water was little & bathrooms were almost empty of water. Nevertheless, we managed to have a pleasant camping experience, especially for these rookies. They are keen to do more camping next time, with campervans, of course.
Acara camping kami diadakan di akhir pekan yang panjang sebelum hari Kemerdekaan 17 Agustus. Tidak seperti biasanya, Sukamantri menjadi tempat yang sangat ramai di waktu itu. Malam hari ramai & berisik oleh aktivitas orang-orang yang camping. Waktu itu juga sudah tidak turun hujan selama beberapa bulan. Suplai air ke tempat-tempat mandi sangat kecil & bak-bak mandi sudah hampir kosong. Walaupun begitu, secara umum kami berhasil memberikan pengalaman camping yang berkesan positif kepada para nubies. Mereka tertarik untuk acara camping di lain waktu, tentu saja dengan campervan.

It’s a VW THING you wouldn’t understand
Volkswagen Type 181 / 182
‘Type 181’ / ‘Type 182’ is the official Volkswagen name. In Britain, it was the Trekker. The USA knew it as the Thing. We call it VW Camat in Indonesia, Kurierwagen in Germany & Pescaccia in Italy. Whatever the name though, the Type 181 / 182 was just a little, well, odd.
Nama resmi Volkswagennya adalah ‘Type 181’ atau ‘Type 182’. Di Inggris namanya Trekker. Di Amerika disebutnya The Thing (yang artinya ‘Sesuatu’ atau ‘Anu’), Kurierwagen di Jerman & Pescaccia di Italia. Kami di Indonesia menamainya VW Camat. Apapun panggilannya, VW Type 181/182 sesungguhnya kendaraan yang memang rada tidak biasa.
You know a car manufacturer is struggling for ideas with a new vehicle when the best name it can come up with for it is ‘The Thing’. Nevertheless, that’s the title Volkswagen bestowed upon its 1969-1983 re-invention of the Kübelwagen, when it started importing it into the United States. Elsewhere, this quirky creation was known as the – deep breath – Mehrzweckfahrzeug/Kurierwagen (Germany), Camat (Indonesia) and Safari (Mexico). And, for the brief while it was available in the UK during 1975, The Trekker. Yet, somehow, ‘The Thing’ rather suited this very eccentric entry in Volkswagen’s catalog.
Anda akan tahu bahwa sebuah perusahaan mobil sedang mengalami masalah inovasi ketika mereka menyebut sebuah produk baru mereka hanya dengan nama “The Thing’ (yaitu ‘Anu’ atau ‘Sesuatu’). Itulah nama yang diberikan oleh Volkswagen ke produk turunan dari model Kübelwagen mereka, produksi tahun 1969-1983, ketika mulai masuk ke Amerika Serikat. Di tempat lain, namanya macam-macam, semisal – ambil nafas dalam-dalam dulu – Mehrzweckfahrzeug/Kurierwagen (Jerman), Camat (Indonesia), Safari (Mexico) dan The Trekker (di Inggris, tahun 1975). Meskipun begitu, nama ‘The Thing’ lebih banyak dipakai di dalam katalog Volkswagen.
That the slabby and corrugated Type 181 / 182 (denoting left and right-hand drive models respectively) looked like a Kübelwagen was no accident, for it took the go-anywhere utilitarian World War II machine as its design vision. Volkswagen had been approached in the 1950s to produce such a vehicle for the West German armed forces but had declined. In the more affluent 1960s though, with basic but fun ‘lifestyle’ vehicles very trendy, it said yes when asked again to come up with a lightweight, fighting off-roader. Beyond the called-for military applications, Volkswagen could now see a leisure market for such a machine. After all, it had worked for the Jeep, hadn’t it? And wasn’t the Beetle-based Dune Buggy also popular in the USA at the time? What could possibly go wrong?
Bentuk Type 181 (yang setir kiri) /182 (yang setir kanan) yang kotak & ‘berprofil’ yang mirip Kübelwagen bukanlah kebetulan, karena kendaraan yang bandel & populer di Perang Dunia II tersebut memang dijadikan acuan desain. Di tahun 1950an, Volkswagen telah diminta untuk membuat kendaraan serupa untuk angkatan bersenjata Jerman Barat tetapi tak ada minat. Di tahun 1960an, ketika gaya hidup berkendaraan yang sederhana tetapi menyenangkan sedang trendi, Volkswagen kembali diminta untuk membuat suatu kendaraan sejenis off-roader ringan & jawabannya adalah YA. Volkswagen melihat bahwa penggunaan kendaraan ini tidak sebatas di dunia militer saja, tetapi juga dapat dipakai di kalangan lebih luas. Contoh yang jelas adalah Jeep. Juga pada waktu itu kendaraan Dune-Buggy yang dibangun dari platform Beetles sedang populer di Amerika Serikat. Jadi apa lagi masalahnya?

The Type 181 used the engine, transmission and mechanics from the Beetle, plus the rear suspension of the Split Screen Bus, mounted on a wider Karmann Ghia convertible chassis for extra strength and stability. A body that looked like it had been knocked together by a toddler out of cardboard boxes was then plonked on top. Actually, there was method in the austere madness, for the Type 181 had to be tough, yet simple, and easy to work on under the tricky circumstances of unpleasant people trying to kill you. For example, the dashboard was hinged, meaning that if the electrics went wrong it could be flipped open so they could easily be tinkered with. The original Kübelwagen had excelled itself from the frozen wastes of Russia to the scorching sands of North Africa, so all Volkswagen really needed to do was update it. Options such as a limited slip differential made the Type 181 even more adept off road, especially considering it stuck to two-wheel drive instead of four. However, the vehicle was so lightweight that being an axle short in the traction department didn’t really matter. And if you needed to shed more pounds, the flat doors could simply be pulled off their hinges.
Type 181 menggunakan mesin, transmisi & mekanikal dari Beetle, sementara suspensi belakang dari VW Dakota lalu dipasang pada sebuah sasis konvertibel Karmann Ghia yang lebih lebar untuk menambah kekuatan & stabilitas. Lalu badan mobil yang kelihatannya seperti buatan anak kecil dari kardus bekas di pasang di atasnya. Type 181 dibuat agar tangguh tetapi tetap sederhana. Misalnya, dashboardnya dipasang dengan engsel, jadi kalau ada masalah dengan kelistrikan di dalamnya, dashboard dapat mudah dibuka & perbaikan dapat mudah & cepat dilakukan. Kübelwagen telah terbukti tangguh di medan beku di Russia sampai ke padang pasir membakar di Afrika Utara, jadi apa yang Volkswagen harus lakukan hanya mengupdatenya saja. Opsi ‘limited slip differential’ membuat Type 181 lebih tangguh di medan off-road, walaupun tetap hanya berpenggerak dua roda, bukan empat roda. Mobil ini juga sangat ringan sehingga dua poros roda sudah cukup. Dan kalau diperlukan menambah muatan, keempat pintu dapat dengan mudah dicopot dari engselnya.
Production got under way in Germany in 1969, albeit with everything destined for NATO forces. Civilian sales kicked off in 1971 in mainland Europe and Mexico, the latter country having started building what it christened the Safari in 1970. The close proximity of its big northern neighbor meant US imports could begin the following year. However, as General Motors owned the rights to the Safari name in the States, another had to be dream up. And so, ‘The Thing’. Yep, somebody obviously wasn’t trying very hard that day.
Produksi dimulai di Jerman tahun 1969 & seluruhnya dikirim ke NATO. Versi sipil mulai dijual tahun 1971 di Eropa daratan & Mexico. Di Mexico inilah Type 181 mulai dibuat di tahun 1970 & dinamai Safari. Eksport ke Amerika Serikat dimulai setahun kemudian. Tetapi perusahaan General Motors sudah mempunyai hak patent dengan model mobil bernama Safari di AS. Lalu kemudian nama ‘The Thing’ dipakai. Tidak perlu susah-susah mencari nama yang wah.
Britain got the Type 181 in 1975, and also didn’t know what to call it, so VW (GB) Ltd. ran a competition, for which the name ‘Trekker’ was plucked as the winner. However, because sales were so poor that the Type 182 was withdrawn from the UK before the year was out. Perhaps it looked just a little bit too much like something the bad guys always drove in old war movies for Blighty’s tastes? It also vanished from the USA at the same time, thanks to safety regulations about the windscreen being too close to the occupants. Of course, you could always fold the front window flat…

Sales to the public ceased completely in 1980, although NATO and other armed forces continued to purchase military-spec ones up until 1983. By that time, 90,785 Type 181 / 182s had been made. Its successor was the even more aesthetically challenged, but at least four-wheel drive, Volkswagen Iltis, which inspired the Audi Quattro.
Penjualan Type 181 ke publik dihentikan di tahun 1980, sementara versi militernya masih tersedia untuk NATO & angkatan bersenjata banyak negara lain sampai tahun 1983. Sampai masa itu, tercatat sebanyak 90,785 Type 181/182 yang telah dibuat. Penerusnya kendaraan berpenggerak empat roda, Volskwagen Iltis, yang lalu menginspirasi Audi Quattro yang terkenal.

VW Safari used in Indonesian Army is actually the civilian version colored in green army.
Berbeda dengan versi militer yang digunakan oleh Bundeswehr, dimana dilengkapi dengan berbagai peralatan militer standard NATO, maka VW Safari yang digunakan TNI-AD tidak dilengkapi dengan perlengkapan standard militer tersebut karena fungsinya hanya sebagai kendaraan dinas perwira menengah di jajaran TNI-AD. Jadi VW Safari yang digunakan oleh TNI-AD adalah versi sipil yang diberi warna hijau tentara.
In October 1974, Solichin GP (the West Java Governor) received 60 units of VW Safari from Col. Arifin Adil, a Director of PT Garuda Mataram. These cars then were distributed among 19 Regencies in West Java. The price of VW Safari at that time was Rp 2,850,000.00 paid in interest-free 3 years installments.
Pada Oktober 1974, melalui Gubernur Jawa Barat Solichin GP, Kolonel Arifin Adil selaku Direktur PT. Garuda Mataram menyerahkan 60 unit jeep Safari. Mobil-mobil Safari tersebut kemudian diteruskan untuk digunakan oleh Wedana-Wedana dari 19 kabupaten di daerah Jawa Barat. Sedangkan harga sebuah Safari ialah Rp. 2.850.000,- yang dibayar lunas secara cicilan selama 3 tahun tanpa dipungut bunga.

PT German Motor Manufacturing began to assemble new model of VW Safari to be marketed in 1975. Some CKD parts were imported from German then later from Puebla, Mexico. This was due to Type 181 was no more produced in German & all were made in Mexico.

To support the 1977 General Election, in February 1976 the government of Indonesia ordered 3,500 units of VW Safari. It was found then that they needed more so in August 1976 they ordered 2,500 units more. Total 6,000 units!
Untuk kelancaran Pemilihan Umum (PEMILU) di tahun 1977, Pemerintah Indonesia sejak Februari 1976 telah memesan 3500 unit Safari. Ternyata jumlah itu masih kurang dan di Agustus 1976 ditambah lagi 2500 unit, sehingga jumlah total pesanan Pemerintah Indonesia menjadi 6000 unit Safari.

The 84km distance was achieved within 12hours – Safari sedang menyeberangi sebuah sungai antara Palu – Parigi di Sulawesi Tengah, sekitar April, sebelum PEMILU Mei 1977. It is a custom here in this country to celebrate Eid with your families & friends. So here we were celebrating Eid among Mechanical Engineering class of 89, Institute of Technology Bandung. We gathered in a friend’s house, the same person who has the Volkswagen town. Remember?
Sudah menjadi tradisi di negara ini untuk merayakan Lebaran bersama keluarga, handai taulan & teman-teman. Maka para alumni Teknik Mesin ITB 89 pun berkumpul untuk halal bihalal di kawasan Serpong, di rumah seorang kawan yang juga pemilik Volkswagen Town. Masih ingat kan?

We set up an outdoor BBQ party at the front yard (actually it’s a side yard) completed with two Volkswagen bus; one is Deep Purple & the other one is a 1977 VW bus owned by the host. The 77 Kombi has two sliding doors on both sides, a rare one.
Acaranya adalah bakar-bakaran (BBQ) di halaman depan (walau sebetulnya halaman samping) lengkap dengan dua buah VW Kombi; yang satu adalah Deep Purple & satu lagi Kombi 77 milik empunya rumah. Kombi 77 ini punya pintu samping di kedua sisi, model yang langka.

Sebuah photo-booth juga kami buat di bagian belakang Deep Purple. Untuk mempercantik dekorasi yang tidak mainstream, kami tambahkan beberapa buah boneka anak-anak. Para model pun cukup kooperatif mengikuti arahan sutradara untuk bergaya manis & menggemaskan. Hahaha….

Endah n Rheza n Campervan
In May & June 2015, Jakarta VW Campervan supported the Nivea road show event in collaboration with the husband-wife singers Endah n Rheza. The Pink Floyd campervan was utilized after changing the color into blue, following the brand color of Nivea.
Di bulan Mei & Juni lalu, Jakarta VW Campervan ikut mendukung acara roadshow Nivea yang bekerja sama dengan pasangan penyanyi suami istri Endah n Rheza. Campervan Pink Floyd diubah warnanya menjadi biru sesuai warna merek Nivea untuk dipergunakan selama acara ini.
The road show was conducted in UI campus Depok, IPB campus Bogor, Esa Unggul university Jakarta, Sumarecon mall Bekasi, Semarang, Jogja & Bali.
Roadshow diadakan di berbagai tempat di berbagai kota yaitu kampus UI Depok, kampus IPB Bogor, kampus universitas Esa Unggul Jakarta, mal Sumarecon Bekasi, Semarang, Jogja & terakhir di Bali.

Not many people know, there is a little Volkswagen town, in scale of 1:87 (known as H0 scale), located inside the front room of my friend’s house, somewhere in Serpong, Southwest of Jakarta. The exact address is confidential, sorry. The owner’s name is Ananta “Karbit” Wijaya. Although his professional job is Technical Director of a private airliner, but his hobby is collecting die-cast models of Volkswagen, Vespa & Mini Cooper. Aircraft models are only few, not as many as cars.
Tanpa banyak orang tahu, ada sebuah kota kecil bernama Volkswagen, tepatnya sebuah maket/model kota berskala 1:87 (dikenal dengan skala H0), yang terletak di ruang depan rumah seorang kawan di bilangan Serpong, sebelah barat daya Jakarta. Alamat tepatnya rahasia, maaf. Nama pemiliknya adalah Ananta “Karbit” Wijaya. Walaupun profesinya sebagai Direktur Teknik di sebuah maskapai penerbangan swasta, tetapi hobbynya adalah mengumpulkan model die-cast mobil merek Volkswagen (VW), Vespa & Mini Cooper. Sementara model pesawat jauh lebih sedikit dibanding model mobil.

Why the town is so called Volkswagen Town? I think obviously because the cars in the town are only Volkswagen, in variety of models or types. No other car brands can be found here. There are 55 VW cars, four Vespa, four BMW motorcycles & two bicycles (maybe both are German made bicycles that I’m not aware of). Judging the architecture of the buildings, I would say this is a German town, or somewhere in Europe.
Kenapa dinamakan kota Volkswagen? Saya kira jawabannya sudah jelas, yaitu hanya mobil merek Volkswagen yang terdapat di kota ini, terdiri dari berbagai model / tipe. Kendaraan merek lain tidak ada. Total ada 55 buah mobil VW. Sementara sepeda motornya ada delapan buah; yaitu 4 buah Vespa & 4 buah BMW, plus dua buah sepeda (saya tidak tahu mereknya, mungkin merek sepeda Jerman). This is the 2nd gas station. An ESSO service panel van is parked nearby. Looks like this particular gas station serves only motor cycles. Karbit started collecting the models ten years ago including the houses, trains, rail tracks, trees, people, animals, etc. mostly from abroad. He got a professional model builder from Bandung building & assembling the town. The layout of the town was designed by himself. The whole town took two months to be built back in mid 2014.
Karbit mulai mengkoleksi model-model tersebut sekitar 10 tahun yang lalu, termasuk bangunan, kereta api & relnya, pohon-pohon, orang-orangnya, binatang, dsb. yang kebanyakan didapat dari luar negeri. Maket kotanya dibuat oleh sebuah pembuat maket professional dari Bandung tetapi desain kotanya dibuat sendiri oleh beliau. Pembuatan maket kota ini memakan waktu dua bulan di pertengahan tahun 2014 lalu.

The town is placed on a custom built table with some storage cabinets below, designed by Uci, his wife, who is a furniture designer. The size is a bit smaller than a pingpong table, about 2.4 x 1.2m. On the walls, there are several cabinets to store & to display other hundreds of car models with variety of scales. Total there are about 600 VW models in this room, plus many more of Mini Coopers, Vespa & aircrafts. This is a kind of heaven room you wish to have when you were a child.
Maket kota tersebut dibangun di atas sebuah meja, berukuran lebih kecil sedikit dari meja pingpong, yaitu 2.4 x 1.2m. Di bawahnya ada beberapa kabinet untuk penyimpanan. Mejanya didesain oleh sang istri, Uci, yang juga seorang desainer furnitur. Di dinding ruangan, digantung beberapa kabinet kaca untuk menyimpan & memajang ratusan model mobil lainnya dengan berbagai ukuran skala. Total ada sekitar 600 model mobil VW, plus puluhan model Mini Coopers, Vespa & pesawat terbang. Ruangan ini mungkin sebuah surga yang sering didambakan ketika kita masih kecil.

HO (as in Oscar) or H0 (as zero) is the most popular scale of model railway in the world. In H0 scale, 3.5mm (0.1378in) represents 1 real foot (304.8mm). H0 scale’s popularity lies somewhat in its middle-of-the-road status. It is large enough to accommodate a great deal of detail in finer models, more so than the smaller N & Z scales, & can also be easily handled by children without as much fear of swallowing small parts. Models are usually less expensive than the smaller scales because of more exacting manufacturing process in N & Z, & also less expensive than S, O & G scales because of the smaller amount of material; the larger audience & the resultant economy of scale also drives H0 prices down.

Campervan camping in Gunung Pancar (again)
Here we are, camping in Gunung Pancar again. Gunung Pancar is a favorite place because it’s near from Jakarta, good access road, not too high elevation (only around 400m asl) & not far from a supermarket or convenience stores for the supplies.
Untuk kesekian kalinya, kami kembali camping di Gunung Pancar. Tempat ini sudah menjadi favorit karena letaknya yang dekat dari Jakarta, aksesnya mudah, elevasinya tidak terlalu tinggi (hanya 400m dpl) & tidak jauh dari supermarket atau toko retail.
In honoring to two of our college friends; one is still under a medical treatment & another one is having a vacation in Indonesia (he lives in Zurich, Switzerland) I gave them the idea to do an easy camping in Gunung Pancar, bringing a campervan; something they wanted to know. Another friend joining us with his 9yo son & 5yo female Doberman.
Untuk menghormati dua orang kawan kuliah dulu; satu sedang menjalani pengobatan & satu lagi sedang berlibur ke tanah air (beliau tinggal di Zurich, Swiss), saya mengajak mereka camping ke Gunung Pancar dengan menggunakan campervan, sesuatu yang sebelumnya membuat mereka penasaran. Satu kawan lagi bergabung membawa putranya berumur 9 tahun & anjing Dobermannya berumur 5 tahun.
It was two days after Eid Al-Fitr; the Jagorawi toll road had a 1km long traffic jam before the Sentul City exit, the place was crowded with people, motorcycles & cars. Yes, it was still holiday season. Compared with the last time I came here, this time was completely different; too many visitors, littering garbage everywhere & bad traffic. The good news was we got the best camping spot; the same spot when we were here in January.
Waktunya hanya dua hari sesudah Lebaran; jalan tol Jagorawi macet parah 1km sebelum pintu keluar Sentul City, tempatnya penuh dengan pengunjung, sepeda motor & mobil. Betul, masih dalam masa liburan. Berbeda dengan waktu kami camping di sini di bulan Januari lalu, sekarang lokasinya terlalu ramai, sampah berserakan di mana-mana & lalu lintas yang padat. Kabar baiknya adalah kami mendapatkan spot camping yang terbaik, yang sama dengan camping terakhir lalu.
So we spot the Deep Purple campervan in the same position. This time we rigged up three tents on the flat field below. When the dusk coming by, many visitors disappeared. Only a few families setting up their tents nearby. We enjoying more as the place became quieter.
Kami memarkirkan Deep Purple di tempat yang sama. Lalu kami mendirikan tiga buah tenda di lapangan yang datar di bawahnya. Menjelang senja hari, banyak pengunjung yang kembali pulang. Hanya beberapa keluarga yang bercamping malam itu. Lokasinya pun menjadi tenang & lebih menyenangkan.
One thing to tell is regarding the female Doberman; Gamma. She is very well trained by her owner. She obeys her master’s commands to stay, to sit, to get into her portable kennel, to get out, etc. She didn’t really get distracted by the crowded. She was pretty much focusing to her master. And she was a very good guard dog, guarding us during the night. She didn’t bark at all during the stay but she could detect if somebody has a bad intention to us; what Cesar Millan always says ‘the negative energy’ that dogs feel & see. In this situation, without barking, she will show her stand & if the guy keep approaching, she will bite, a bad bite.
Ada satu hal yang menarik untuk diceritakan di sini yaitu anjing Doberman betina yang diajak camping bernama Gamma berumur 5 tahun. Kelihatan sekali bahwa anjing ini sangat terlatih. Gamma menurut apa saja yang diperintahkan oleh tuannya sekaligus pelatihnya untuk diam di tempat, duduk, untuk masuk ke dalam kandang portabelnya, untuk keluar kandang, dsb. Gamma tidak begitu terdistraksi oleh keramaian melainkan tetap fokus kepada pelatihnya. Anjing ini juga anjing penjaga yang baik, menjaga kami di waktu malam. Selama di tempat camping, Gamma tidak menggonggong sekalipun. Anjing ini dapat mendeteksi kalau ada orang yang berniat jahat, sesuatu yang sering disebutkan oleh Cesar Millan sebagai ‘energi negatif’ yang dirasakan & dilihat oleh anjing. Dalam situasi seperti ini, tanpa menggonggong, Gamma akan berdiri menghadang & jika orang berniat jahat tersebut tetap maju, maka Gamma akan menyerang & menggigit, yang dapat mengakibatkan cedera serius.
Next time, I will bring my Labrador & perhaps my Beagle camping with her & let them be trained by my friend.
Lain waktu, saya akan membawa serta Labrador saya & mungkin juga Beagle untuk camping bersama Gamma & akan memberi kesempatan kepada kawan saya untuk coba melatihnya.
Eating, cooking, talking, drinking, cooking, eating, talking, etc. that’s all we did spending the evening & the night. We also set up a bonfire & burned a few marshmallows. It was a dry season so we had no worries of getting rain.
Makan, memasak, ngobrol, minum-minum, memasak, makan, ngobrol, dsb. Hanya itulah yang kami lakukan bersama mengisi waktu sore & malam. Kami juga menyalakan api ungun & memanggang marshmallow. Di tengah musim kering, kami tidak kuatir akan turun hujan.
It was a pleasant quick & easy camping with my old friends. Usually I do camping with my family. We enjoy our friendship. By the next morning, we left the place back to Jakarta. Gunung Pancar, for sure, sooner or later, we’ll be back with the campervans.
Acara campingnya cukup singkat tetapi sangat berkesan diluangkan bersama-sama kawan lama. Biasanya saya camping bersama keluarga. Kami menikmati persahabatan ini. Di pagi harinya, kami kembali pulang menuju Jakarta. Cepat atau lambat, kami pasti akan kembali ke Gunung Pancar.
