Not many people know, there is a little Volkswagen town, in scale of 1:87 (known as H0 scale), located inside the front room of my friend’s house, somewhere in Serpong, Southwest of Jakarta. The exact address is confidential, sorry. The owner’s name is Ananta “Karbit” Wijaya. Although his professional job is Technical Director of a private airliner, but his hobby is collecting die-cast models of Volkswagen, Vespa & Mini Cooper. Aircraft models are only few, not as many as cars.
Tanpa banyak orang tahu, ada sebuah kota kecil bernama Volkswagen, tepatnya sebuah maket/model kota berskala 1:87 (dikenal dengan skala H0), yang terletak di ruang depan rumah seorang kawan di bilangan Serpong, sebelah barat daya Jakarta. Alamat tepatnya rahasia, maaf. Nama pemiliknya adalah Ananta “Karbit” Wijaya. Walaupun profesinya sebagai Direktur Teknik di sebuah maskapai penerbangan swasta, tetapi hobbynya adalah mengumpulkan model die-cast mobil merek Volkswagen (VW), Vespa & Mini Cooper. Sementara model pesawat jauh lebih sedikit dibanding model mobil.

This is one of the two rail road hairpin turns in Volkswagen town. Do you notice a cable car? – Ini adalah satu dari dua tikungan tusuk-konde rel kereta di kota Volkswagen. Apakah Anda melihat kereta-gantung yang sedang melintas?

Why the town is so called Volkswagen Town? I think obviously because the cars in the town are only Volkswagen, in variety of models or types. No other car brands can be found here. There are 55 VW cars, four Vespa, four BMW motorcycles & two bicycles (maybe both are German made bicycles that I’m not aware of). Judging the architecture of the buildings, I would say this is a German town, or somewhere in Europe.
Kenapa dinamakan kota Volkswagen? Saya kira jawabannya sudah jelas, yaitu hanya mobil merek Volkswagen yang terdapat di kota ini, terdiri dari berbagai model / tipe. Kendaraan merek lain tidak ada. Total ada 55 buah mobil VW. Sementara sepeda motornya ada delapan buah; yaitu 4 buah Vespa & 4 buah BMW, plus dua buah sepeda (saya tidak tahu mereknya, mungkin merek sepeda Jerman). Dari arsitektur bangunannya, kemungkinan besar kota ini settingnya di negara Jerman, atau paling tidak di Eropa.

There are two ESSO gas stations in town. This is one of them. I have no idea why that empty Hebmuller is parked in the middle of the road. Maybe the fuel tank is really empty – Ada dua buah SPBU ESSO di kota & ini adalah salah satunya. Saya tidak mengerti kenapa ada Hebmuller kosong ditinggal di tengah jalan. Mungkin mogok karena tangki bensinnya benar-benar sudah kosong…

This is the 2nd gas station. An ESSO service panel van is parked nearby. Looks like this particular gas station serves only motor cycles. Meanwhile a Hebmuller & a Karmann-Ghia are passing by looking for other gas station – Ini adalah SPBU kedua. Sebuah panel van ESSO diparkir di dekatnya. Sepertinya SPBU ini hanya melayani sepeda motor. Sementara sebuah Hebmuller & sebuah Karmann-Ghia melewatinya sedang mencari SPBU yang lain…

Karbit started collecting the models ten years ago including the houses, trains, rail tracks, trees, people, animals, etc. mostly from abroad. He got a professional model builder from Bandung building & assembling the town. The layout of the town was designed by himself. The whole town took two months to be built back in mid 2014.
Karbit mulai mengkoleksi model-model tersebut sekitar 10 tahun yang lalu, termasuk bangunan, kereta api & relnya, pohon-pohon, orang-orangnya, binatang, dsb. yang kebanyakan didapat dari luar negeri. Maket kotanya dibuat oleh sebuah pembuat maket professional dari Bandung tetapi desain kotanya dibuat sendiri oleh beliau. Pembuatan maket kota ini memakan waktu dua bulan di pertengahan tahun 2014 lalu.

Volkswagen town has two RV parks. This is one of them. Look, there are three beautiful Dormobile campervans with that distinctive accordion pop-top roof…& a jogging man, too – Kota Volkswagen mempunyai dua taman untuk camping, piknik & parkir kendaraan campervan. Ini salah satunya. Lihat, ada tiga buah campervan Dormobile yang cantik dengan atap pop-top berbentuk akordionnya… & juga seorang yang sedang jogging…

The town is placed on a custom built table with some storage cabinets below, designed by Uci, his wife, who is a furniture designer. The size is a bit smaller than a pingpong table, about 2.4 x 1.2m. On the walls, there are several cabinets to store & to display other hundreds of car models with variety of scales. Total there are about 600 VW models in this room, plus many more of Mini Coopers, Vespa & aircrafts. This is a kind of heaven room you wish to have when you were a child.
Maket kota tersebut dibangun di atas sebuah meja, berukuran lebih kecil sedikit dari meja pingpong, yaitu 2.4 x 1.2m. Di bawahnya ada beberapa kabinet untuk penyimpanan. Mejanya didesain oleh sang istri, Uci, yang juga seorang desainer furnitur. Di dinding ruangan, digantung beberapa kabinet kaca untuk menyimpan & memajang ratusan model mobil lainnya dengan berbagai ukuran skala. Total ada sekitar 600 model mobil VW, plus puluhan model Mini Coopers, Vespa & pesawat terbang. Ruangan ini mungkin sebuah surga yang sering didambakan ketika kita masih kecil.

If you are hungry but lazy to cook, just go to the corner of the water fountain roundabout to find a foodtruck area. That’s also a favourite place for Polizei-men to find some food – Jika Anda lapar tetapi sedang malas memasak, maka datanglah ke salah sudut dekat bundaran air mancur di tengah kota ke tempat food truck. Tempat ini juga menjadi tempat favorit para petugas Polizei (polisi Jerman) mencari makan…

HO (as in Oscar) or H0 (as zero) is the most popular scale of model railway in the world. In H0 scale, 3.5mm (0.1378in) represents 1 real foot (304.8mm). H0 scale’s popularity lies somewhat in its middle-of-the-road status. It is large enough to accommodate a great deal of detail in finer models, more so than the smaller N & Z scales, & can also be easily handled by children without as much fear of swallowing small parts. Models are usually less expensive than the smaller scales because of more exacting manufacturing process in N & Z, & also less expensive than S, O & G scales because of the smaller amount of material; the larger audience & the resultant economy of scale also drives H0 prices down.
HO atau H0 adalah skala model yang paling popular untuk perkeretaapian di dunia. Di skala H0, 3.5mm (0.1378in) mewakili panjang 1 kaki (304.8mm). Skala H0 populer karena letaknya di tengah-tengah di antara ukuran skala lainnya. Ukurannya cukup besar untuk mengakomodasi detil dengan baik, lebih baik daripada skala N & Z yang lebih kecil. Juga lebih aman buat anak-anak karena tidak kekecilan yang bisa tertelan secara tak sengaja. Model ukuran ini umumnya lebih murah harganya dibanding skala N & Z yang lebih kecil yang memerlukan kepresisian lebih waktu diproduksi tetapi juga lebih murah daripada skala S, O & G karena material yang diperlukan lebih sedikit. Jumlah peminatnya yang lebih banyak & faktor ekonomis tadi semakin membuat harga skala H0 menjadi lebih turun.
